- Giza Plateau - Begin your tour with a pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a tour guide. The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were all built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also features several cemeteries and the remains of a workers’ village.
The Giza Plateau is situated at the edge of the Western Desert, about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of the Nile River in Giza, and roughly 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Cairo’s city center.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, which is now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site has not been fully excavated.
- Pyramid of Menkaure - Menkaure’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple contained several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
- Great Sphinx - Get an up-close view of The Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and the head of King Chephren, standing by the massive funeral complex.
- Memphis and Sakkara - Visit Memphis, the first capital of Egypt, founded in 3100 BC. Then, explore the Step Pyramid, also known as the Sakkara Pyramid or Zoser Pyramid, the oldest building structure in the world.
- Bent Pyramid - The Bent Pyramid is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located at the royal necropolis of Dahshur, about 40 kilometers south of Cairo. Built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu (c. 2600 BC), it is a unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt and was the second pyramid constructed by Sneferu.
The Bent Pyramid rises from the desert at a 54-degree angle, but the top section (above 47 meters) is built at a shallower 43-degree angle, giving the pyramid its distinctive ‘bent’ appearance.
- Dahshur - The Red Pyramid, also known as the North Pyramid, is the largest of the three major pyramids at the Dahshur necropolis in Cairo, Egypt. Named for the reddish hue of its red limestone stones, it is the third largest Egyptian pyramid, after those of Khufu and Khafra at Giza. It is also considered Egypt’s first successful attempt at building a ‘true’ smooth-sided pyramid. Locals call the Red Pyramid el-heram el-watwaat, meaning the Bat Pyramid.
The Red Pyramid was originally covered with white Tura limestone, but only a few of these stones remain at the base corners. During the Middle Ages, much of the white Tura limestone was removed for construction in Cairo, revealing the red limestone beneath. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel in Cairo or Giza.
