Highlights
  • Giza Plateau - Begins at 8:00 am with a pickup from your hotel in either Cairo or Giza by your guide, followed by a transfer to the Giza Pyramids to start your half-day tour. You’ll visit the Great Pyramids - Cheops, Chephren & Mykerinos.

The pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are among the world’s most famous tourist attractions, having been popular even in Roman times. Each of these magnificent structures served as the final resting place for a king of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), with the other two constructed for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest of the three, and it remained the tallest building in the world for 3,800 years!

  • Great Sphinx - Next, visit the Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and the head of King Chephren, standing by the vast funeral complex.
  • Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The only completely preserved portrait of the king is a three-inch high ivory figurine found in a temple ruin at Abydos in 1903. All other reliefs and statues were discovered in fragments, and many of Khufu’s buildings are lost. Everything known about Khufu comes from inscriptions in his necropolis at Giza and later documents. For instance, Khufu is the main character in the Westcar Papyrus from the 13th dynasty.
  • Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple yielded several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860. Others were discovered during subsequent excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
  • Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex consists of a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also yielded several statues of Menkaure.
  • Coptic Cairo - Begin your full-day tour by visiting Old Cairo, known as Christian Coptic Cairo, one of the most significant locations visited by the Holy Family. Here, you can visit and enter the Church of Abu-Sergah and St. Barbara, the Hanging Church, and the old Jewish synagogue – Ben Ezra Synagogue.
  • Synagogue Ben Ezra - This synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was found in the 19th century to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts. The collection, known as the Cairo Geniza, was brought to the University of Cambridge in England by Solomon Schechter’s initiative. It is now divided among several academic libraries, with the majority kept at the Cambridge University Library.
  • Islamic Cairo - Continue your tour to Islamic Cairo, founded in 641 A.D. by the first Muslim leader Amr Ibn Elas. In Islamic Cairo, you can visit and enter the Amr Ibn Elas Mosque, built in 642 A.D. by the Muslim leader Amr Ibn Elas in the El Fustat area.

Follow this with a visit to the largest mosque in Cairo, the Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa near the Citadel in Cairo.

Next, visit the Al-Rifa’i Mosque, located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan. This mosque, dating from around 1361, was designed to complement the older structure architecturally.

  • Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, or Alabaster Mosque, is situated in the Citadel of Cairo and was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848.

Located on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque, the largest built in the first half of the 19th century, is the most visible mosque in Cairo with its animated silhouette and twin minarets.

The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s oldest son, who died in 1816.

This mosque, along with the citadel, is one of Cairo’s landmarks and tourist attractions, and it is one of the first features seen when approaching the city from any direction.
