Get an up-close view of The Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and King Chephren’s head, standing by the grand funeral complex.
Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now beneath Nazlet el-Samman village. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, though the site remains unexcavated.
Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, discovered by Mariette in 1860.
Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added.
Great Sphinx - The Sphinx dates back to King Khafre’s reign. In the New Kingdom, Amenhotep II dedicated a new temple to Hauron-Haremakhet, later expanded by subsequent rulers.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Visit the Egyptian Museum to marvel at Tutankhamen’s treasures. Known as the Egyptian Museum or Cairo Museum, it houses a vast collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. With 120,000 items, a portion is displayed while the rest are stored. Built in 1901 by Garozzo-Zaffarani, designed by Marcel Dourgnon, it is one of the region’s largest museums. As of March 2019, it is open to the public. In 2021, it will be succeeded by the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.
