- Giza Plateau - The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are among the world’s most famous tourist attractions, even popular during Roman times. These magnificent structures were the final resting places for kings of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), with the other two for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest, and it remained the tallest building for 3,800 years!
While the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are surrounded by many other monuments. Each king’s pyramid was part of a larger complex that included smaller queens’ pyramids, a satellite pyramid, mastaba tombs for nobility and family members, and burials of actual and/or symbolic boats.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The only completely preserved portrait of King Khufu is a three-inch high ivory figurine found in a temple ruin at Abydos in 1903. Other reliefs and statues were found in fragments, and many of Khufu’s buildings are lost. Information about Khufu comes from inscriptions in his necropolis at Giza and later documents, such as the Westcar Papyrus from the 13th dynasty.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple contained several statues of Khafre, discovered in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860 and during later excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also contained several statues of Menkaure.
- Great Sphinx - Next, visit the Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and the head of King Chephren, standing by the massive funeral complex.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Continue your tour at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which showcases the largest and most valuable collection of Egyptian art in the world. The museum displays over 250,000 genuine artifacts dating back 5,000 years, including a special exhibit dedicated to Tutankhamun, featuring treasures, gold, and jewelry buried in his tomb for over 3,500 years until its discovery in the 1920s.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Finally, visit the Khan El Khalili Bazaar, known for its numerous shops trading fine brassware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver, gold, antiques, and more. (1 hour spent)
The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel in Cairo.
