Abhaneri is renowned for its ‘Baori’, a stepwell crafted by the local populace for rainwater collection. The Baori served not only as a water reservoir during dry spell but also as a refreshing hideaway. Chand Baori, one of the country’s deepest and largest stepwells, remains a notable example of this architectural format in India. The Baori features three sets of staircases that lead downwards into the earth, with an underground palace positioned to one side. The palace and steps, arranged in a quadrilateral layout, culminate at the well at the base. These stairs extend to a depth of thirteen levels. The palace at the Baori’s base offered cool refuge for the royal family during the sweltering summer days. A spacious courtyard surrounding the Baori offers panoramic views of the stepwell. Sheltered spaces around this courtyard contain beautifully carved sandstone objects and idols, some as ancient as the 10th century.
