It is believed that the axis of the temple was positioned by the ancient Egyptian architects in such a way that on October 22 and February 22, the rays of the sun would penetrate the sanctuary and illuminate the sculptures on the back wall, except for the statue of Ptah, a god connected with the Underworld, who always remained in the dark. Initiated around 1264 BC and concluded 20 years later in 1244 BC, the assembly of the temple compound, designated as the “Temple of Ramesses, cherished by Amun”, was noteworthy. This monument was one amongst six rocky sanctuaries constructed during the extended reign of Ramesses II in Nubia. The fundamental intentions behind these constructions were to astonish Egypt’s allies in the south, as well as establish the prominence of the Egyptian faith in that terrain.
It’s speculated that the ancient Egyptian creators situated the temple’s alignment so that on February 22 and October 22, sunlight would stream directly into the shrine, beautifully illuminating the statues at the rear, except for the image of Ptah, the Underworld god, who remained perpetually shadowed. This extraordinary phenomenon is observed by crowds at Abu Simbel on February 21 and October 21.
