Situated 280 kilometers (a 3-hour drive) south of Aswan, you’ll find the most stunning and sizable rock-carved temples. This scenic site is nestled between Lake Nasser, realized due to the construction of a new dam, and Egypt’s vast desert. Deemed to be Pharaonic masterpieces of our age, UNESCO saved these temples between 1964 to 1968 from being submerged by Lake Nasser’s rising waters. Good road condition, complete with superb paving, makes the journey smoother. In route, you’ll encounter the sights of Le Mirage on both sides. The Abu Simbel temples, dating back to 1200 BC and carved during the reign of Ramses 2, are a historical sight to behold. He honored himself with the larger temple, and the smaller one is dedicated to his beloved wife, Nefertari, the favored one among his wives.
