Set off early in the morning, around 4 to 4:30 AM, for a drive of approximately 3 hours, following the convoy to the southern banks of Lake Nasser at Abu Simbel. This globally celebrated site is where Ramses II commissioned the carving of two sun temples from the limestone mountains.
At the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte and Amon-Re, four iconic colossal statues of Ramses II sit majestically gazing across the desert, while six grand statues stand before the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the cow-headed goddess of love, and built in honor of Ramses’s beloved wife, Queen Nefertari.
Following the completion of the High Dam, a campaign was initiated to preserve the temples from rising waters, and in 1968, UNESCO and the Egyptian government orchestrated the relocation of the temples, cutting them into blocks and moving them piece-by-piece to a higher location on the hillside.
Originally carved into the mountainside, the temple is now covered by an artificial mountain, designed to mimic the original setting. The temple was initially constructed so that the rising sun would shine between the statues of Ramses and into the sanctuary’s inner recesses every February 22nd and October 22nd.
