• National Museum of Ghana - On March 5th, 1957, the largest and oldest of the six museums managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board was inaugurated by the Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina. The archeology section features artifacts ranging from the Stone Age to the recent past. The ethnography gallery’s permanent exhibition includes chief’s regalia, traditional Ghanaian musical instruments, gold weights, beads, textiles, stools, and pottery. Additionally, there are items from other African countries acquired through trade, such as Senufo masks from Ivory Coast, wooden Zulu figures, and beaded items from Southern Africa. The museum also houses Bushongo carvings from the Congo and ancient Ife bronze heads from Nigeria. The modest yet striking art gallery primarily showcases modern paintings in oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and collages by contemporary Ghanaian artists, along with sculptures made from various materials.

• Independence Square - After Ghana gained independence from the British in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah became the first prime minister and president of the Gold Coast. To commemorate the country’s independence, Nkrumah built the square, coinciding with Queen Elizabeth II’s visit. Completed in 1961, the area was named Black Star Square. Independence Square in Accra, Ghana, features monuments such as the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and Liberation Day Monument, all honoring Ghana’s independence struggle. The annual Independence Day parade on March 6th is held in Black Star Square, with the Golden Jubilee parade on March 6, 2007, marking 50 years of independence, led by President John Kuffour. The square also hosts major national festivals and public gatherings.

• Centre for National Culture, Accra - The Center for National Culture is the largest craft market in the country. Here, you can bargain and shop for souvenirs among the vendors and learn to play local instruments like the drum.

• James Town Lighthouse - Take a walking tour through Jamestown, one of Accra’s oldest neighborhoods. Visit James Fort and Usher Fort, two significant colonial-era forts in historic Accra.

• W.E.B. DuBois Center - The W.E.B. DuBois Center is the home, library, and final resting place of American-born social justice crusader William Edward Burghardt DuBois. The center includes an Open Air Theatre for intellectual seminars, lectures, workshops, and cultural events, as well as a museum with artifacts and his personal library.

• Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - Located in downtown Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum honor the memory of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Pan African Prime Minister and President, who was born on September 21, 1909, and passed away on April 27, 1972.

• Labadi Pleasure Beach - Labadi Beach, also known as La Pleasure Beach, is the busiest beach on Ghana’s coast. It is one of Accra’s most scenic beaches, maintained by the locals, and is an ideal spot to relax after a hot, sunny tour of the city.
