Cape Coast Castle - The Cape Coast Castle is one of the largest castles still standing in Ghana today, built by European forces. It began as a Portuguese trade lodge in 1555 on a part of the Gold Coast that later became known as the Cape Coast. In 1653, after Sweden took control of the Cape Coast, the Swedish Africa Company constructed a permanent wooden fort to facilitate the trade of gold and timber. Today, it houses the regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and serves as a historical museum with a gift shop offering Ghanaian arts and crafts.
Elmina Castle - Elmina Castle, originally named São Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) by the Portuguese in 1482, is located in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). It is the oldest European structure still standing south of the Sahara, as it was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea. Initially established as a trading colony, it later became a key site in the Atlantic slave trade. Elmina Castle is now a prominent historical landmark and a significant portion of Werner Herzog’s 1987 drama film “Cobra Verde” was filmed there. It stands as a powerful reminder of the history of the slave trade and is a popular destination for African American visitors seeking to connect with their heritage.
Kakum National Park - Ghana’s most visited attraction, nestled within the Kakum Rainforest, features an incredible canopy walkway suspended 40 meters above the ground. This walkway offers a captivating and beautiful view of the forest and its wildlife.
