- Cape Coast Castle - Cape Coast Castle is one of 40 significant “slave castles” or large commercial forts constructed on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. Initially established as a Portuguese “feitoria” or trading post in 1555, it was named Cabo Corso.
In 1653, the Swedish Africa Company built a timber fort here. It initially served as a hub for timber and gold trade, later becoming a pivotal site in the Atlantic slave trade. Other notable Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. These castles were used to hold enslaved Africans before they were transported across the Atlantic to the Americas, particularly the Caribbean. This “gate of no return” marked their final stop before the ocean crossing. Cape Coast Castle, along with other forts and castles in Ghana, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors will be taken directly into the castle, where an accredited tour guide will provide a guided tour. The operator will await the visitors’ return before proceeding to the next destination.
- Kakum National Park - Nestled in the lush tropical jungle of Kakum National Park, the canopy walk was ingeniously designed by two Canadian engineers and five Ghanaians. Aiming to boost tourism, particularly ecotourism, in the underappreciated national park, the designers created a unique feature to attract visitors. Thus, an elevated trail through the canopy was conceived. Opened on Earth Day in 1995, the canopy walkway comprises seven distinct bridges suspended from the trees, soaring over 130 feet above the ground, spanning over 1,000 feet in total.
After a brief but challenging uphill hike, visitors will reach the canopies among the trees! A local guide will accompany them, ready to answer any questions. The operator will await their return before heading back to Accra.
Visitors are advised to wear enclosed footwear rather than flip-flops or open-toed shoes.
- Elmina Castle - Elmina Castle was constructed by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine Castle), also known as Castelo da Mina or simply Mina (or Feitoria da Mina), in present-day Elmina, Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast. It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea and remains the oldest European building south of the Sahara.
Initially established as a trade settlement, the castle later became a crucial stop on the Atlantic slave trade route. The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1637, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1596, and took control of the entire Portuguese Gold Coast in 1642. The slave trade persisted under Dutch control until 1814. In 1872, the Dutch Gold Coast, including the fort, became a British possession.
Visitors will be entrusted to an accredited tour guide, and the operator will be waiting for them once the tour concludes.
