Sailing the Dream: A Catamaran Adventure Around Milos
Drawn by the allure of the Aegean Sea and tales of hidden pirate coves, I embarked on a catamaran cruise around Milos. Join me as I recount a day filled with turquoise waters, ancient caves, and unforgettable hospitality.
Setting Sail on the Aegean
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself at the port of Adamas, ready to embark on a journey that promised to be nothing short of magical. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable as I boarded the luxurious 44-foot catamaran, greeted by the warm smiles of the crew. Forest, our guide, along with the admiral and the captain, exuded a contagious enthusiasm that set the perfect tone for the day ahead.
As we sailed northwest towards Cape Vani, the sight of the towering 30-meter rock and the remnants of the old iron mine took my breath away. The history embedded in these landscapes was tangible, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the stories they held. Our first swim stop at the bay of Kalogries was a revelation. The water was a shade of turquoise so vivid, it felt like diving into a dream. I couldn’t resist the call of the ocean, and as I plunged into the cool embrace of the sea, I felt a sense of freedom that only the open water can provide.
Hidden Caves and Pirate Tales
Our journey continued towards Sykia, the largest cave in Milos. The volcanic rocks surrounding the cave’s entrance painted a picture of raw, untamed beauty. It was a photographer’s paradise, and I found myself lost in the moment, capturing the vibrant hues and dramatic landscapes.
Kleftiko, the legendary pirate hideout, was our next stop. The allure of its hidden caves and mysterious aura was undeniable. Snorkeling in the crystalline waters, I explored the underwater passages, feeling like an adventurer uncovering secrets of the deep. Stand-up paddling added an extra thrill to the experience, and as I returned to the boat, the crew welcomed us with refreshing sodas and a spread of delicious snacks. It was a moment of pure bliss, surrounded by the dramatic cliffs of Kleftiko, with the savory aroma of our upcoming lunch wafting through the air.
A Feast for the Senses
Lunch was a culinary delight, with tender Greek chicken grilled to perfection, served on the deck of the catamaran. The sight of the majestic rocks of Kleftiko, coupled with the flavors of our meal, created a memory that will linger long after the trip. The crew’s hospitality was unmatched, and their attention to detail made the experience all the more special.
As we continued along the southern coastline, the bay of Gerakas offered a secluded paradise, accessible only by boat. Here, we indulged in a BBQ lunch that was both sumptuous and satisfying. The latter part of the trip took us to Theiorychia and Poliegos, where the abandoned sulfur mines and the impossibly clear waters of Galazia nera left us mesmerized. Our final swim in this serene bay was followed by delectable desserts, the perfect ending to a perfect day.
As we sailed back to Adamas, the unique rock formations of Glaronisia and the bear-shaped rocks of Arkoudes provided a stunning backdrop to the guided tour. The historical insights added depth to the natural beauty we had been enjoying all day, leaving me with a heart full of memories and a longing to return to this enchanting island.
