Highlights

Fly Addis to Jinka(BCO)-Turmi

Jinka - Pick you up in Jinka airport up on your arrival.

Firs stop is Mursi Tribe in where you will noticed the feature of the Mursi women wearing ornamental clay disks (debhinya) in their bottom lips as symbols of beauty and adulthood. When a girl is in her early teenage years, her bottom lip is cut and kept open with the clay disk until it heals. After it, we will drive back to jinka for lunch. You will then hike to Ari Village for 2 hours back and forth. In almost all villages you’ll meet potters, blacksmiths and women grinding grain to make the Ari version of injera, which uses maize or sorghum instead of tef and has dagussa (‘finger millet’) mixed into it. If you’re lucky someone may invite you to try bunaketele, a delicious drink made from coffee leaves, chillies and several spices including lemongrass. After it, over night in hotel.

Turmi-(Kangaten)Nyangatom trib(-Karo-Turmi

Turmi - In the morning after breakfast we will drive to Kangaten. A small town located on the other side of the Omo River crossing over a bridge to visit the Nyangatom tribe.
The elders of both sexes wear a lower lip plug the men’s made from ivory and the women’s from copper. Young girls wear a dress made from goat- or sheepskin with unique decoration made from nails. After visiting this Tribe’s village for as much time we need and head to Karo, Karo Tribe’s village of Korcho located in near by the shore of Omo River where you will make a great deal of interactions with these unique tribes of Karo (The least numbered tribes in terms of population size). Visit their door to door activities by walking through their villages and interact with them by entering their home. then you will continue your journey Hamer tribes small town of Turmi where you will meet the tribes including Banna and Hammer on our way down. In the late afternoon we will visit deep communal village of Hammer tribes.

Turmi-Omorrate-Jinka

Jinka - In the morning after breakfast we will drive to Omorate, the border town with Northwest of Kenya where the unique tribal communities of Dasenech are found. We will cross the Omo River with a local boat made from Fig tree. The Daasanach tribe are found in the most southern part of the Omo Valley and they live at the point where the Omo River delta enters Lake Turkana. They are primarily pastoral people, growing maize, beans and pumpkins at the time of year when the delta floods. During dry seasons they rely on their cattle and goats for milk, meat, and hides. Their homes are dome-shaped, made from branches covered with hides with mats covering the floor. In the afternoon, we will drive to Turmi if there is bull jumping ceremony you will attend that. They perform every 3 days. A deep-rooted traditions, values, and culture - bull jumping is a ceremony performed by the Hamer tribe as a rite of passage for young men. We will then drive to Jinka for over night in your hotel.

Jinka-Mursi-Jinka Fly to Addis Ababa

Jinka - After breakfast visit jinka museum. Behind glass cases starting with the Karo and the Bodi with the others in the next big room: cow skin skirts and clothing, baskets, weapons, utensils, body decorations, musical instruments, games. Then Mursi women lip disks and ear plates, the small stools / headrests (keri) that Banna and Hamer men carry around. While I recall seeing some of these in the Addis museums, the grouping by people helped with the compare and contrast.

Most of all the groups have a pastoralist lifestyle element based on cattle, though many have also been practicing agriculture to supplement. A few groups, such as the Mursi, are still nomadic, moving from one location to another as they feel they need to, but others practice sedentary farming, living in villages with fixed locations, with only the men going out afar to tend their animals, sometimes for weeks at a time. From museum, we will drive to Airport then fly back to Addis.

Excellent Service - We just came back from 4 days Omo Valley tours and from the beginning to the end, the service was excellent. We were looking for a group for Danakil Depression, then he let us join his clients for both Danakil and Omo Valley. We had a really great time in both Danakil and Omo Valley. Special thanks to Mickey; he responded immediately when we asked him a question. There were more than 5 drivers in the group, but our driver, Million, was the best driver. We call him Mr. Fantastic. He is so friendly with everybody, and everyone was wonderful. We highly recommend Danakil Depression tours to visit Ethiopia, the most trusted tour operator. Thank you so much for all things you have done.

See Vanishing African Tribes! - I've traveled to all 54 African countries. This is the tour you want to go on if you want to meet Africa's most exotic tribes. In a relatively small corner of Ethiopia, you'll find 16 unique tribes. Although you won't visit all of them, each one is special. This is an outstanding tour because you can photograph anyone, even close up. They'll pose with you. The only annoying thing is that some Africans will beg you for money while you're visiting them. The reason it's annoying is that each village gets some of the money you paid to go on this tour. Therefore, the villagers benefit from your tour, albeit in a small way. They've agreed to let you photograph them in exchange for a collective sum that Danakil Depression Tours pays. Still, some (understandably) want a bit more for themselves. That's fine, but a few can be a bit too insistent. Aside from that petty gripe, the tour is fabulous. Your grandkids will be jealous because these tribes may abandon their traditions in 50+ years. See them while they still exist!

Excellent Service - As this is the first time that my wife and I took part in a package tour,we were pleasantly surprised and relaxed to have everything arranged, especially the food part that was not too flashy and served along with sliced fruits.Transportation was another integral part of any tour . The tour manager ,Mickey, needs to be complimented for his role in keeping the group together and was attentive to each individual person's need. We were able to see Bull jumping eremony at the various tradition and visit the odoo prist , but we were able to watch the some animals only from a distance. Overall the trip was satisfying and we hope to take part in another one.

Life changing experience - Mickey was amazing! At the very last minute my traveling partner got sick and was unable to accompany me. I was a bit nervous to travel on my own but Mickey made me feel comfortable and safe. Mickey was very knowledgeable about the Omo Valley and the individual tribes. He made sure I got the true and natural experience of each tribe. I am forever charged after this journey and I own it all to Mickey and his team.

4 Days Omo Valley Tour - 100% recommend Daniel Depression Tour and Travel. It was a perfect 4 days Omo Valley Tour! Mickey is an excepcional guide, who is passionate about the area and its population and took all the effort to make me experience the most of it. On the first day I was already watching the bull-jumping ceremony, one of the most impressive you can attend in the area. Over these days we managed to visit lots of Omo Valley Tribes: Hamar, Dassanech, Karo and Mursi. Mickey took care of all the accommodations, which were very well chosen, all with excellent service. Minalu has a very good english as well as a deep knowledge of the culture of the tribes. Above all that, we always had an additional local guide of the specific tribe we were visiting, so we could interact really well. Special thanks to Mayle, our local guide with Hamar, who was very kind, professional and attentive. Gidi was our driver and super careful all the way. Last but not least: Mickey you have been more than a guide, you were a true friend these days. Ameseginalehu!
