- National Museum of Ethiopia - Begin your exploration of Addis Ababa with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia. Renowned for its exceptional quality and diverse exhibits, this museum features archaeological displays, including the 3.5 million-year-old fossil of Lucy (or Dinkinesh, meaning ‘thou art wonderful’ in the local language), a hominid woman of the Australopithecus Afarensis species. Lucy’s discovery in 1974 revolutionized our understanding of human ancestry, revealing that our predecessors walked the earth 2.5 million years earlier than previously believed. The museum also houses remarkable artifacts from the pre-Axumite civilization. Please note, the National Museum is closed on Mondays.

- Mount Entoto - This historical site was the residence of Emperor Menelik II, who established Addis Ababa after relocating from Ankober. Considered a sacred mountain, it is home to numerous monasteries and renowned churches, including Saint Raguel and Saint Mary. The mountain is densely forested with eucalyptus trees, introduced from Australia during Menelik II’s reign and largely planted during Emperor Haile Selassie’s era, earning it the nickname “lung of Addis Ababa.” The forest has historically provided firewood and building materials for the city.
The Ethiopian Heritage Trust, a non-profit organization, is actively working to restore part of the mountain to its natural state as a park. Entoto Natural Park, located on the northeastern edge of Addis Ababa, covers 1,300 hectares on the southeastern slopes of Mount Entoto.

The occupiers moved the market westward to the area around Fitawrari Habte Giyorgis Dinagde, naming it Merkato Dinagde. Thus, the present Addis Merkato was established under the Italian occupational government’s segregationist policies.
Meanwhile, the Italians restricted the historic St. George Merkato to Europeans, renaming it Piazza, which featured European-style shops with glass window displays. The predominantly Arab merchants who owned stores there eventually…
