Celebrate International Women’s Day in Addis Ababa: A Journey of Culture, Cuisine, and Nature

Celebrate International Women’s Day in Addis Ababa with a blend of nature, culture, and culinary delights. From exploring Africa’s oldest park to mastering Ethiopian cuisine, discover how this vibrant city honors the achievements of women amidst its rich traditions and diverse landscapes.

Embracing the Spirit of International Women’s Day in Addis Ababa

As the sun rises over Addis Ababa on March 8th, the city awakens to a day of celebration and reflection. International Women’s Day is a time to honor the achievements of women worldwide, and in Ethiopia’s vibrant capital, the festivities are as diverse as the city itself. With a partly cloudy morning giving way to overcast skies and a chance of rain in the afternoon, it’s the perfect day to explore both indoor and outdoor activities that celebrate the strength and resilience of women.

Start your day with a visit to the Menagesha Forest(Menagesha Suba Forest), Africa’s oldest park, where you can immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature. The park is open from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, offering a serene escape from the bustling city. As you hike through the lush forest, keep an eye out for the endemic Menelik’s bushbuck and the Ethiopian oriole, a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region. A recent review from November 2019 highlights the peacefulness of the forest:

Relaxing day in a nice forest - Booked this to get out of the city for a few hours and enjoy some quiet. The forest was lovely and quiet. The falls were a bit disappointing but it’s the peak of the dry season so I wasn’t totally surprised. Lunch was delicious. Shout out to Yousef for being a great guide who was easy to get along with. The only downside, would have liked to walk a bit longer. Would definitely consider booking with Walk In Ethiopia again. (Reviewed at: 2019-11-10)

After a morning of exploration, head back to the city for a culinary adventure that will tantalize your taste buds and deepen your appreciation for Ethiopian culture.

A Culinary Journey Through Ethiopian Traditions

As the afternoon clouds gather, it’s time to step indoors and embark on a culinary journey with the Taste Addis Ababa(Ethiopian Cooking Class). Available from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM or 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, this cooking class is a delightful way to spend a rainy afternoon. Under the guidance of skilled local chefs, you’ll learn to prepare traditional Ethiopian dishes like injera and Shiro wat, using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

This hands-on experience not only teaches you essential cooking skills but also offers insights into the cultural significance of each dish. As you savor the fruits of your labor in a warm, communal setting, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s rich culinary heritage. Whether you’re an experienced chef or a curious novice, this class is a must-do for anyone looking to connect with the heart of Ethiopian culture.

Celebrating Women Through Art and Culture

As the day draws to a close, take a moment to reflect on the powerful stories of women who have shaped Ethiopia’s history and culture. Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, where you can explore exhibits dedicated to the country’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. From ancient artifacts to contemporary art, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Ethiopian women throughout the ages.

Alternatively, immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene at one of Addis Ababa’s many galleries or cultural centers. Here, you can discover the works of talented female artists who are redefining the boundaries of creativity and expression. As you wander through the exhibits, you’ll be inspired by the resilience and strength of women who continue to make their mark on the world.

With its mix of natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural treasures, Addis Ababa offers a unique and enriching way to celebrate International Women’s Day. Whether you’re exploring the ancient forests of Menagesha, mastering the art of Ethiopian cooking, or delving into the stories of remarkable women, this city invites you to embrace the spirit of the day and create lasting memories.
