Debre Libanos is a significant monastic hub for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The monastery was established by the famous 13th-century mystic, Saint Teclehaimanot. Near the recently constructed church, there is a small cave where it is believed he stood on one leg for seven years until the other leg withered and fell off. Upon arriving at Debre Libanos, our first stop will be the Jemma Gorge. The Jemma River, a tributary of the Nile, plunges nearly 1000 meters into the valley below. At the gorge and in the forest surrounding the church, we can expect to see various bird species including the Banded Barbet, Black-headed Forest Oriole, White-billed Starling, Red-billed Starling, White-winged Cliff Chat, White-backed Black Tit, White-cheeked Turaco, and Hemprich’s Hornbill. Additionally, we will encounter one of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada, also known as the bleeding-heart baboon.
