Among its archaeological treasures is the 3.5 million-year-old fossil of Lucy (or Dinkinesh, meaning ‘thou art wonderful’ in the local language), a hominid woman of the Australopithecus Afarensis species. Lucy’s discovery in 1974 revolutionized our understanding of human ancestry, revealing that our forebears walked the earth 2.5 million years earlier than previously believed. The museum also showcases remarkable artifacts from the pre-Axumite civilization.

Lion of Judah - The Lion of Judah monument is situated in the square of the Addis Ababa railway station, marking the end of Winston Churchill Avenue, a major city thoroughfare. Crafted in gilded bronze, the sculpture rests on a black granite pedestal adorned with relief portraits of Emperors Menelik II and Haile Selassie, Empress Zewditu, and Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael. Created by French sculptor Georges Gardet in 1930 for Emperor Haile Selassie’s coronation, the monument was preserved after the 1974 revolution as a symbol of Ethiopian antifascist resistance and heritage. Tomoca Coffee - The Ethiopian coffee ceremony, known as jebena buna in Amharic, is a cherished social and cultural tradition involving the preparation, brewing, and serving of coffee, accompanied by snacks and conversation. It is a time for family and friends to gather, often marking the start of events.
Ethiopian coffee ceremony:
Preparation
The host cleans the green coffee beans and roasts them over a charcoal brazier or stove. The beans are then ground using a traditional wooden mortar and pestle. The host adds the ground coffee to a jebena, a traditional clay coffee pot, and heats water. The coffee is brewed in three rounds, each with its own name and significance.
Pouring
The coffee is poured into small ceramic cups called finjal, using a horsehair filter to keep grounds out. The coffee is poured in a thin stream to form a “ring” in the cup. The ceremony is a time for connection, free from phones, screens, or television.
