Additional Information

The Meskel Festival, a prominent Ethiopian Orthodox celebration, is observed all over Ethiopia on the 26th and 27th of September as a memorial to the discovery of the True Holy Cross of Christ by Queen Helena (Saint Helena) in the 4th century. The ritual involves the ignition of a vast Demera, a bonfire. The prime location to witness the Meskel Festival is in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, at the well-known Meskel Square. Notable celebrations of Meskel also take place across the nation, particularly in the Northern and Southern regions of Ethiopia. In 2013, UNESCO included the Meskel Festival in its roster of intangible cultural heritages of humanity.
