Highlights

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka

Jinka - After being picked up from the airport, you will have the option to visit the National Museum or the open market Merkato. In the afternoon, you will fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka, where our driver will meet you at the airport and take you to Ari village for a visit.

Visiting the Mursi Tribe in Mago Park and Drive to Turmi

Turmi - Early in the morning, drive to Mago National Park to visit the Mursi highlands, home to one of Ethiopia’s most renowned tribes. The Mursi women are famous worldwide for their decorative lip plates, which stretch their lower lips. The size of the plate is directly proportional to the women’s beauty, pride, and desirability. Photograph their culture and traditions. In the afternoon, return to Jinka for lunch. Afterward, continue driving through the Omo Valley region to Turmi via Dimeka to visit the Hamer tribes. If it is Thursday, we will stop at the Alduba market on the way. The Hamer tribe is one of the largest groups in the Valley, known for their fine pottery and remarkable hairstyling. The men wear dramatic clay hair buns with ostrich feathers when they have killed a fierce animal.

Visiting Karo Tribe - Turmi

Visiting Omorate/Dasanesh Tribe

Omorate - Early in the morning, drive to the edge of the Omo River. Cross the river by canoe to visit the Dassanech tribe, a semi-nomadic group of about 40,000 people whose clans stretch across Sudan, Kenya, and Southern Ethiopia. They are known for their unique and ornate hair buns. After photographing the tribe, drive back to Turmi to relax in the afternoon or photograph the town of Turmi.

Drive to Arba Minch and Visit Lake Chamo

Arba Minch - In the morning, drive to Arba Minch. In the afternoon, after 3 pm, take a boat trip on the clear blue waters of Lake Chamo to see crocodiles, hippos, and various aquatic bird species. The northern shores of Lake Chamo are famous for their large crocodiles, which can be seen in great numbers basking in the heat. You can also photograph birds like the African fish eagle, flamingos, herons, storks, and kingfishers.

Visiting Dorze Village and Fly Back to Addis Ababa

Dorze Village - In the morning, drive 40 km northwest of Arba Minch to the Guge Mountains to visit the Dorze and Chencha villages. Once warriors, the Dorze now earn a living through farming and weaving. They speak an Omotic language, and the Dorze name is synonymous with the best woven cotton cloth. Their beehive-shaped houses are made entirely of organic material and have small gardens surrounded by beds of spices, cabbage, and tobacco. After lunch, transfer to Arba Minch Airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. Arrive in Addis Ababa in the late afternoon, transfer to the hotel, and have a room for day use to wash and change before the evening flight. You may want to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at the markets. In the evening, enjoy a Farewell Dinner at a traditional restaurant with live cultural dances before departure.

Additional Information

The Omo River Valley in southern Ethiopia is undoubtedly one of the most unique regions in the world. Within this small geographic area reside at least 30 distinct ethnolinguistic groups, whose lifestyles, until very recently, did not vary much from those of their ancestors. Elaborate body painting, scarification, women with clay lip plates, elaborate headdresses of clay and feathers help distinguish one tribe from one another. This part of Ethiopia, extending into northern Kenya, is incredible for both its cultural diversity and the isolation of its inhabitants for centuries past. As influences from the outside world inevitably encroach on this fascinating land, the people of the Omo Valley will face many challenges regarding their culture and way of life.

One of the best tour companies! - I am a nature/wildlife photographer. I came to Ethiopia because of the endangered and some endemic animal species. After talking to a few tour operators in Ethiopia, none of them seems to be very enthusiastic about the program I had in mind. Then I found Mulugeta who later I prefer to as Mulie. Mulie and I crafted a customized program to include one week on Bale Mountain, one week in Omo Valley and one week on Simien Mountain. Later on, my son and my daughter decided to join me with a slightly modified program. Mulie was willing to accommodate the changes and we regularly communicate to ensure everything is in order. When we arrived in Addis, with a broad smile, he greeted us at the airport with a rose for each of us. For the entire trip, he was always attentive with a smile! There are a couple of small issues, as it normally happened with any trips, Mulie always found ways to pull it off. I don't expect everything to be smooth, but when a problem arises, not many people have the ability to solve it. To me, this is a very big deal! Before bidding farewell to Ethiopia, Mulie invited us to his home for an authentic Ethiopian home-cooked meal and coffee! I traveled to many places in the world and I normally don't bother to write the review, but this is an exception. If you plan to travel to Ethiopian, whether for photography or sightseeing, I highly recommend you contact Mulie. You will not be disappointed! And if you want the best experience, making sure to request the driver whose name is "Captain"! Mulie, you are one of the best guides I've ever had! Thank you!

Wonderful Experience In Addis Ababa. A Must for every Photographer! - I always wanted to travel to Ethiopa and while doing research on the country from my hometown in Spain I got in contact with Ethiopian Photography Tours. During the months prior to my arrival Mulugeta helped me organising my trip and shared with me extremely valuable information that I couldn’t find anywhere else on the internet. I finally arrived in Addis Ababa at the end of August 2019 where I spent 2 days with Mulugeta discovering the city and then kept on going with my travel further south towards the Omo Valley. I feel truly lucky for the oportunity of wandering the streets of Addis with Mulugeta, the city is huge and he knows each corner of it. He knows exactly where to go and when to go. He brought me to a festival that was taking place that day and that I would have never heard of alone. It was a unique photographic experience and also a fantastic gathering of both Ethiopian culture and its wonderful people. Mulie also introduced me to authentic local places to taste amazing food, coffee and more.. He also understands that photography is more than a passion but also a lifestyle. That beauty is everywhere if you stop and take the time to see it… He is flexible and immediately adapted to my style of photography and my personal needs. Mulugeta is a fluent English speaker and thrives to share his knowledge on his culture and on photography, he also helped me on planning the rest of my journey in the south and his tips on where to go, the do’s and the dont’s really made my trip! I cannot recommend enough Ethiopian photography Tours, It has been one of the highlight of my journey in Ethiopia and I cannot wait to meet again with my new friend Mulugeta for new photography adventures somewhere else in this amazing country. Thank you again for this unforgettable experience!
