• Wenchi Crater Lake - Take a day trip to the northern Crater Lake Wenchi. Here, we have a 5-6 hour hike (or riding tour) through the beautiful countryside. You’ll walk down to the crater lake before crossing the lake by boat. On a small island, we’ll visit a monastery and church. From the opposite side of the lake, we start our way back through a lovely green valley with numerous clear water springs and small streams. The route takes us past corn mills powered by water and are still being used today for processing teff, a local type of grain. In the late afternoon, we return to Addis Ababa.

Wenchi, located on the foothill of a dormant volcano, is a striking testament to a mighty volcanic eruption that happened in the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic Era, and is a three-hour journey from the capital city, Addis Ababa. The volcano, which last erupted about a millennium ago, formed an uneven caldera of rock that’s now clad in a vibrant green blanket of vegetation. This magnificent crater boasts of a vast lake speckled with tiny islands, thermal mineral springs, cascading waterfalls, picturesque valleys and fertile farmland. In addition, an ancient monastery with a church on one of the lake islands further adds to the charm and allure of this place. The spectacular landscape and the wonderful scenic beauty make Wenchi Crater Lake nothing short of a heaven on earth. It’s fascinating to think that one of the most influential volcanoes from the past is now a place abundant with natural gifts, including hot springs and waterfalls.
