The Elephant Conservation and Care Centre (ECCC), the first and only of its kind in India, was set up in 2010 in the Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh. It was launched in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, chiefly to offer a haven for severely mistreated and exploited elephants. Now, the ECCC provides a home to over 30 saved elephants and serves as an active educational outlet to alter public viewpoints towards elephant conservation. All the elephants at ECCC are refugees rescued from extreme hardship.
