Agra is renowned for the Taj Mahal, the most stunning and photographed building globally. Besides the Taj Mahal, Agra also boasts two additional UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, along with numerous Mughal-era gardens.
Agra served as the capital of India during the Great Mughal era and later as the capital of the North-Western Province under British rule. Each Mughal and British ruler left their legacy through various architectural wonders such as Chini-Ka-Roza, Aram Bagh, Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra, and many intricately carved graveyards.
During this one-day tour of Agra, visitors will explore some of the most significant and beautiful architectural monuments.
- Taj Mahal - Meet the driver and tour guide at the chosen pick-up point to visit the Taj Mahal, the tour’s highlight. Known as the Monument of Love, Romance in Marble, and Crown of the Palaces, scholars and poets have described this magnificent building in many ways. For tourists, it is simply superb, amazing, and marvelous. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved queen, the Taj Mahal’s enchanting allure attracts visitors worldwide and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most visited and photographed monument globally.
- Agra Fort - Agra Fort, or the Red Fort of Agra, is a well-preserved massive fort complex that served as the main residence of Mughal Emperors until 1638 when the capital moved from Agra to Delhi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains many palaces built by different rulers. Akbar Mahal, Jahangiri Mahal, Palace of Roshan Ara, Diwan-E-Am, Diwan-e-Khas, and Moti Masjid are the main architectural sites within the fort complex. However, the most notable palace is the Mutthamman Burz or Shahjahani Mahal, where Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal’s creator, was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, fulfilling his wish to view the Taj Mahal. Today, similar uninterrupted views of the Taj Mahal can still be enjoyed.
- Marble Handicrafts Agra - The art of Marble Inlay Work, or Pietra-dure or Pachhikari, was introduced to Agra during the Taj Mahal’s construction. This art of inlaying semi-precious stones into white marble originated centuries ago in Agra and continues to be celebrated by artisans who are direct descendants of the Taj Mahal’s builders. Traditional techniques of this hand-performed art can only be witnessed live in Agra, the home of Pachhikari.
