Taj Mahal - The Taj Mahal is a monument symbolizing an eternal love story. It was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife. Agra Fort is not just a castle; it’s a fortress from where the Mughals ruled their empire for centuries.
Agra Fort - This fort represents the first major building project of Emperor Akbar. It was rebuilt between 1565-1575 AD on the site of an earlier castle, and Shah Jahan extended it in the following century. Although it was designed as a formidable military structure, ornamental elements were incorporated to give the fort a unique aesthetic appeal. The elegant edifices within Agra Fort – DIWAN-i-AAM, DIWAN-i-KHAAS, MUSSAMAN BURJ, KHAAS, SHEESH MAHAL, and many more – offer visitors a wonderful opportunity to appreciate Mughal architecture, design, and decoration. It also provides insight into the administrative system and lifestyle of the Mughal Emperors.
Fatehpur Sikri - Located 38 km from the city, it takes about an hour to drive from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri. It served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585 during Akbar’s reign, before being abandoned, likely due to a lack of water. It was originally the kingdom of the Sikarwar Rajput kings, who later settled in the nearby Kheragarh and Morena districts of Madhya Pradesh. Fatehpur Sikri is an excellent example of Muslim architecture. The Fatehpur Sikri Mosque is said to be a replica of the Mecca Mosque, with designs influenced by Hindu and Parsi architecture.

Agra, once the capital of the Mughal Empire, boasts five stunning monuments. Among these, three have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1983 and 1986. The first is the Taj Mahal, a monument of eternal love built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Arjuman Bano Begum. The second is Agra Fort, a semi-circular structure with a circumference of about 2.5 km. Its palatial buildings reflect the grandeur of the Mughal era and were constructed by the third Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great. The third is Fatehpur Sikri, also protected by UNESCO and declared a World Heritage site in 1986. The Buland Darwaza, or Gate of Victory, can also be seen there.
