Explore the historical realms where the Solanki dynasty once reigned over Gujarat, crafting architectural marvels over a millennium ago. These structures stand as a testament to the era’s grandeur. Your private guide will collect you from your hotel lobby, and you’ll proceed directly to Modhera in the Mehsana district to visit the Sun Temple. Constructed in 1028 A.D. by King Bhimdev of the Solanki Dynasty, the king believed himself to be a descendant of the Sun God. The temple’s design ensures that the first rays of the sun illuminate the image of Lord Surya. With its intricately crafted archways and stunning exterior walls, the temple exemplifies the architectural brilliance of its time. Every inch is adorned with depictions of deities, and the temple is divided into three sections: the Surya Kund, the Sabha Mandap, and the Guda Mandap.
After soaking in the splendor of Modhera, the journey continues to Patan, a charming town encircled by fort walls and lively markets. This town, with its enduring allure, boasts beautiful havelis and narrow ‘pols’ or villages. Engage with bidi (traditional cigarette) makers and discover their craft. Other gems of this rustic town include Patola and Mashru weavers and the pristine Jain temples. A visit to the Hemachandracharya Jain Gnan Library reveals ancient Hindu and Jain texts, while the Rani ki Vav step-well, built by Queen Udayamati of the Chalukya dynasty in memory of her husband Bhima I, is a must-see. Don’t miss the Patola House Museum, where you can purchase a silk Patola sari as a memento of your visit to this historic town. The tour concludes with a return to your hotel.
