- Aia - We’ll leave the ‘big city’ and head to the rural area of Gipuzkoa to uncover the secrets of Idiazabal cheese production in a traditional farmhouse. Typically, a kilo of this cheese sells for around 20 euros, but during an annual competition to find the best cheese of the season, prices can soar to 14,000 euros per ½ kilo! We’ll have a tasting session where you’ll learn the secrets of Basque cheeses and sample traditional varieties made from unpasteurized sheep’s milk. This is the Real Thing, the Real Cheese.
- Gaintza Txakolina - There’s a Spanish saying that translates to, ‘With bread and wine you walk the road’. We’ve already enjoyed the bread and cheese, and now we’ll find the wine on the coast, in the hills overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. This is the perfect place for growing the grapes that produce txakoli, a typical Basque white wine with a slight acidity, perfect for pairing with fish. We’ll visit a small, sustainable winery that uses traditional methods and grapes known as Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza. Here, you’ll discover the nuances and strength of txakoli.
- Basque Country - All of this will take place near Getaria, a coastal town where we’ll take a short walk before dining. Getaria is not only home to a mountain with a mouse-shaped profile but also the birthplace of two famous Basques: Juan Sebastián Elcano (the first person to circumnavigate the globe) and Cristóbal Balenciaga (the internationally renowned designer known as the Prince of Fashion). Additionally, our coast is renowned for its charcoal-grilled fish, which is ubiquitous in the streets near the port, making it the perfect place for lunch. Need more reasons?
- Monte Igueldo - This is a dream road for two reasons: you could take a nap after lunch and dream of sheep (latxas, of course), but we don’t recommend it. The road back to San Sebastián is one of the most scenic on the Basque Coast. It would be a shame to miss these winding roads, which are splashed by waves during heavy storms, or the cows grazing near tranquil farmhouses on Mount Igeldo. Consider yourself warned.
