Highlights
  • Aia - We’ll leave the ‘big city’ and head to the rural area of Gipuzkoa to uncover the secrets of Idiazabal cheese production in a traditional farmhouse. Typically, a kilo of this cheese sells for around 20 euros, but during an annual competition to find the best cheese of the season, prices can soar to 14,000 euros per ½ kilo! We’ll have a tasting session where you’ll learn the secrets of Basque cheeses and sample traditional varieties made from unpasteurized sheep’s milk. This is the Real Thing, the Real Cheese.
  • Gaintza Txakolina - There’s a Spanish saying that translates to, ‘With bread and wine you walk the road’. We’ve already enjoyed the bread and cheese, and now we’ll find the wine on the coast, in the hills overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. This is the perfect place for growing the grapes that produce txakoli, a typical Basque white wine with a slight acidity, perfect for pairing with fish. We’ll visit a small, sustainable winery that uses traditional methods and grapes known as Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza. Here, you’ll discover the nuances and strength of txakoli.
  • Basque Country - All of this will take place near Getaria, a coastal town where we’ll take a short walk before dining. Getaria is not only home to a mountain with a mouse-shaped profile but also the birthplace of two famous Basques: Juan Sebastián Elcano (the first person to circumnavigate the globe) and Cristóbal Balenciaga (the internationally renowned designer known as the Prince of Fashion). Additionally, our coast is renowned for its charcoal-grilled fish, which is ubiquitous in the streets near the port, making it the perfect place for lunch. Need more reasons?
  • Monte Igueldo - This is a dream road for two reasons: you could take a nap after lunch and dream of sheep (latxas, of course), but we don’t recommend it. The road back to San Sebastián is one of the most scenic on the Basque Coast. It would be a shame to miss these winding roads, which are splashed by waves during heavy storms, or the cows grazing near tranquil farmhouses on Mount Igeldo. Consider yourself warned.

Larry from Texas - The tour was very good and we even got to make our own cheese . The wine was exceptional and something we would not have experienced by ourselves.

Simply the Best - Incredible days with an incredible guide. Some of the best days of any trip I’ve ever taken. You’d be a fool to hire anyone else in Basque Country!

A day of learning and dining with Markel - Markel was an amazing tour guide. We took the wine and cheese tour with him and had a wonderful day. As he drove a us around the Basque countryside he regaled us with tales of local heroes and shared his enthusiasm for his culture. In the mountains, we learned how cheese is made in the traditional way. And near the coast we visited a winery with fantastic views, learning about how these specific grapes must be grown about head height to take advantage of the ocean breezes and avoid mold. Down in Ameztoi, the fishing village just up from Getaria, Markel helped us order fresh fish grilled on-location, and we sat at a lovely outdoor patio overlooking the bay where the ships come in with their catch. Fantastic food, and wonderful company. I would endorse Markel for anyone who wants to enjoy a day of stimulating conversation and culinary delight.

Gorgeous day in Basque Country - My husband and I were on a trip celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. There were a lot of itineraries to choose from on TripAdvisor but this is the only one that included visiting a cheese farm. So, so happy we chose it. First of all, Markel was an incredibly, well-informed, well-spoken guide from the Basque country who was able to explain the land and culture so well. So we were already learning a lot on our drive to a family-owned cheese farm. We loved meeting this family and hearing about their business as well as meeting their goats and seeing the way they make their cheese. I've been on cheese cave tours before but never got to see (and smell) rennet made on a farm. This is the most detailed cheese experience I've ever had. Seeing every aspect and the passion of the people who make it just made my day. We went to a txakoli winery for a tasting (note that you don't do the wine-making tour which I was expecting but didn't mind as I was ready to just enjoy some wine and views after the cheese tour). I wish I had bought more bottles to bring back with me. Last was a delicious lunch of fresh, flaky fish, a tour of the village and some ice cream. Thank you Markel, for an informative, lovely day full of great memories and conversation.

Priceless - Well where to begin with our review, 31 reviews for this company, all 5*, only begins to describe the experience. We booked a private tour of local cheese and wine and were picked up at our accommodation by Markel in a luxury Mercedes. From the onset Markel was absolutely delightful and we were made to feel completely at ease and in the safest of hands. He was the most polite and respectful individual, courteous at all times and attentive. The passion for his heritage was infectious so by the time we reached our first destination we were completely engaged. Our first stop was a fourth generation artisan cheese producer, of some renown, still working the sheep farm of his forefathers and producing the most exquisite product. We spent quite some time on the farm going through life as they have known it for years, it was like being part of the best written documentary. One of the nicest things was that Markel was as interested as us, it felt like a family visit. This experience continued through the day were Markel was greeted by our hosts as part of their family which only made our presence all the more pleasant and enjoyable at the winery and then for lunch at a fishing village. Absolutely fabulous, priceless.

Unforgettable Experience - My husband and I took this private tour to Basque Country and it was absolutely amazing. It was raining that morning and we didn't even care. Ernes picked us up at our hotel with no problem. The van was clean and comfortable. He taught us so much about the region and the culture while driving that all the drives went by fast. The sheep farm was old and quaint. I loved the views and meeting the famer and his sheep. Learning about how sheep cheese is made was so interesting! We got to try some with the local cider and it was delicious. I'm now forever in love with Txakoli wine. We had a tasting with local tuna and anchovies, so yummy. Don't knock the anchovies until you try them. The views from the winery were gorgeous. The sun came out in the afternoon and I swooned. The seafood lunch was very fresh, the fish melted in your mouth. The fishing town (Ernes told us the name but I forgot) was small and walkable. The views on the drive back were spectacular, Ernes asked if we'd like to take the mountainous roads back to the hotel and we said yes. I can't say enough good things about this tour. Ernes was kind, knowledgeable, and professional the entire tour. 10 stars. Thank you for making our anniversary an unforgettable day. Meaghan and James

Cheese and Wine Tour - 5/5 great tour. All the stops were interesting and delicious in equal measure. Mikel was a fantastic guide and his breadth of knowledge on a huge number of subjects was by far the highlight.

A must do in San Sebastián - Ania was an incredible tour guide and so knowledgeable about basque culture and the history of the area. The tour exceeded our expectations. From a tour of the small towns to the Incredible meal in Getaira, we could not have done this experience on our own. As a bonus Ania gave us great recommendations for the remainder of our stay too which was appreciated. Ania is also an incredible photographer and captured memories that we will cherish. Highly recommend this tour and this company. Thank you!!

Fantastic day in Basque country! - My husband and I so enjoyed our day trip with Ania! Meeting Eneko (and his sheep!) and learning both about the cheese-making process and what it's like being a 4th generation farmer was an experience I'll never forget. The winery was a lovely oasis, and the grilled fish in Getaria was a culinary high point of our trip. We hope to return to Basque country and another tour soon!

Fantastic Day Trip out of San Sebastián - Ernest, our tour guide, was so engaging and taught so much about the Basque region and culture. The tour was fantastic from the cheese making farm to the Txaloli vineyard tour which included of course the wine tastings but also the most delicious Tuna and other local foods. This area was absolutely breathtaking on the mountains overlooking the coast. And to top it off lunch in the seaside village of Getaria was just amazing and so traditional. The white asparagus were a complete treat! My 22 year old daughter and I had the best day. 8 hours just flew by!!! Thank you Ernest!!
