Al-‘Ain al-Sokhna is a town in the Suez Governorate, situated on the western shore of the Red Sea’s Gulf of Suez, 55 kilometers (34 mi) south of Suez and approximately 120 kilometers (75 mi) east of Cairo.
Recent archaeological excavations have revealed an ancient Egyptian port and settlement in this area. The site was first highlighted in 1999 by Professor Mahmud Abd El Raziq. Since then, French and Egyptian archaeologists have been studying the area. It is comparable to the port of Mersa Gawasis further south and connected the mining areas of the Sinai with Memphis, about 120 km across the Eastern Desert, which was significant for turquoise and copper.
