The Penang Hill funicular train service began in October 1923. The current funicular trains, the fourth generation system, started operating on April 24, 2011. The funicular track spans 1,996 meters (1.99 km) from the lower to the upper station, making it the longest in Asia. The Penang Hill funicular tunnel, at 79 meters (258 feet) long and 10 feet (3.0 meters) wide with a steepness of 27.9 degrees, is the steepest tunnel track in the world. There are 52 hill bungalows on Penang Hill (42 privately owned and 10 state-owned), most over 100 years old, with Bel Retiro (Governor’s Bungalow), built in 1789, being the oldest. In 2016, Penang Hill attracted over 1.6 million visitors.
