Aix-en-Provence - Located just 1 hour and 50 minutes from Nice, Aix-en-Provence, the historic capital of Provence, is recognized as a City of Art and History. Step back in time to 122 BC when the Roman consul Caius Sextius Calvinus conquered and demolished the ancient city-oppidum under Ligurian control to establish a camp that swiftly evolved into a city. Throughout its 22 centuries of existence, Aix-en-Provence has been under the rule of the Visigoths, Franks, Lombards, and Saracens, before joining the Kingdom of France in 1789. Wander through the historic district, which boasts an impressive architectural heritage with 156 monuments classified or registered as historic. Notable sites include the Town Hall (built between 1655 and 1678), the Courthouse, the Cour Mirabeau, Place des Quatre-Dauphins, Opera Street—birthplace of Paul Cézanne, the Jeu de Paume theater, one of the rare Italian-style theaters in France, and the Saint-Pons or Trois-Sautets bridge.
