- Skutustaoagigar - Mývatn, Iceland’s fourth largest lake, is surrounded by a variety of natural wonders. The Mývatn area is known for its volcanic activity, featuring unique lava formations, craters, and hot springs. The first stop is the pseudo-craters at Skútustagigar, formed 2300 years ago when hot lava flowed over wet ground, causing the water to evaporate rapidly and propel the lava upwards.
- Dimmuborgir Lava Formations - Next, visit Dimmuborgir (or Dark Castles), where you can explore some of Iceland’s most intriguing lava formations. According to folklore, the 13 Icelandic Santa Clauses reside in Dimmuborgir.
- Grjotagja Cave - Grjotagjá, once the hideout of an 18th-century outlaw, served as a local hot spring until the 1970s. Although it became too warm for bathing after the Krafla eruptions, the caves remain popular for their deep blue water and mystical ambiance, especially since they were featured as a filming location for the series Game of Thrones.
- Hverir - To reach the colorful Solfatars of Hverarönd, cross the Námaskarð mountain pass. Here, experience the power of nature amidst sulfurous fissures in the cracked earth, steaming fumaroles, and bubbling mud pools.
- Krafla Lava Fields - The last volcanic eruption in the Krafla area occurred in 1984/85. A large geothermal power plant is located here, and the crater lake Víti captivates with its turquoise water.
