A Journey Through the High Atlas Mountains

Our adventure began with a warm welcome from Omar, our lively driver, who picked us up right from our Riad. As we drove through the bustling streets of Marrakech, Omar’s enthusiasm was infectious. He pointed out various landmarks and shared snippets of local history, setting the tone for the day ahead. Our first stop was a camel ride, an experience that delighted both the kids and adults alike. Donning traditional Berber attire, we embarked on a short but memorable journey through the desert landscape. The children were thrilled, and it was a perfect introduction to the Berber culture.

Continuing our ascent into the High Atlas Mountains, we paused at an Argan oil cooperative. Here, we were treated to a delightful breakfast and a demonstration of how the famous oil is made. The cooperative’s relaxed atmosphere allowed us to explore and purchase products without any pressure. It was a wonderful opportunity to support local artisans and learn about the significance of Argan oil in Moroccan culture.

Exploring the Valleys and Waterfalls

As we ventured further into the valleys, the landscape transformed into a breathtaking panorama of cliffs and lush greenery. Omar dropped us off at a picturesque cliff edge, where we marveled at the stunning views down the valley. It was here that we met Hassa, our guide for the next leg of the journey. Hassa’s knowledge of the area was impressive, and he shared fascinating insights into both local and national history.

The hike through the valley to the waterfalls was a highlight of the day. Despite some initial concerns about the steepness, the incline was manageable, and Hassa ensured everyone was comfortable. After our hike, we descended into a nearby village, where we were treated to a traditional Berber lunch on a rooftop terrace. The meal, consisting of bread, rice, and a delicious chicken and vegetable tagine, was a culinary delight. The intimate setting allowed us to connect with our fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter as we soaked in the stunning scenery.

Our journey continued to Hassa’s own village, where we experienced the warmth of Berber hospitality firsthand. Meeting Hassa’s family was a touching experience, and we were welcomed into their home with open arms. Traditional tea was served, and we enjoyed the breathtaking views from their living room windows. It was a moment of genuine connection, offering a glimpse into the close-knit community that thrives in the valley.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Omar and the waiting van. Reflecting on the day’s experiences, both my wife and I agreed that this excursion was one of the most memorable of our travels.
