Highlights
  • Giza Plateau - Explore the Giza Pyramids, including the Great Pyramids of Giza: Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos. Visit the Valley Temple, where priests mummified King Chephren, the owner of the second pyramid. This is also where you can get a close-up view of the Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and King Chephren’s head, standing by the vast funeral complex.
  • Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried under the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated.
  • Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
  • Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also revealed several statues of Menkaure.
  • Great Sphinx - The Sphinx dates back to the reign of King Khafre. During the New Kingdom, Amenhotep II dedicated a new temple to Hauron-Haremakhet, which was later expanded by subsequent rulers.
  • Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Located 27 km southwest of Cairo, visit the Step Pyramid built for King Zoser. This pyramid is a significant part of the evolution from the simple mastaba to the well-known pyramid form.
  • Imhotep Museum - Situated in the Saqqara area, this museum honors Imhotep, the architect of King Djoser’s pyramidal tomb and the first to use stone on a large scale for building. The museum has six halls displaying statues, coffins, paintings, utensils, architectural elements, and other artifacts from the Saqqara archaeological site. Notable halls include a simulated tomb with a mummy, a wooden coffin, and funeral furniture, as well as a hall dedicated to architect and archaeologist Jean-Philippe, who worked on restoring King Djoser’s pyramid collection.
  • Mit Rahina Museum - Located in Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, this museum features the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. The city dates back to 3100 B.C.
