Gezira lies west of downtown Cairo and Tahrir Square, connected by four bridges on both the east and west sides of the Nile: the Qasr El Nil Bridge, 15 May Bridge, Al-Gala’a Bridge, and 6th October Bridge. Under the 19th-century ruler Khedive Ismail, the island was initially named “Jardin des Plantes” (French for “Garden of Plants”) due to its extensive collection of exotic plants from around the world.
