Standing at 187 meters (614 feet), it held the title of the tallest structure in Egypt for 37 years until 1998, when it was overtaken by the Suez Canal overhead powerline crossing. It was the tallest structure in North Africa for 21 years until 1982, when it was surpassed by the Nador transmitter in Morocco. It was the tallest structure in Africa for one year until 1962, when it was overtaken by the Sentech Tower in South Africa.
- Cairo Opera House - The Cairo Opera House (Arabic: دار الأوبرا المصرية, Dār el-Opera el-Masreyya; literally “Egyptian Opera House”), part of Cairo’s National Cultural Centre, is the premier venue for performing arts in the Egyptian capital. It hosts most of Egypt’s top musical ensembles and is situated on the southern part of Gezira Island in the Nile River, within the Zamalek district near downtown Cairo.
- Egyptian Museum - The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, commonly referred to as the Egyptian Museum (Arabic: المتحف المصري, romanized: al-Matḥaf al-Miṣrī, Egyptian Arabic: el-Matḥaf el-Maṣri [elˈmætħæf elˈmɑsˤɾi]) (also known as the Cairo Museum), is located in Cairo, Egypt, and boasts the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world. It contains over 120,000 items, with a significant portion on display. Situated in Tahrir Square in a building constructed in 1901, it is the largest museum in Africa. Among its treasures is Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s collection, including the famous gold burial mask, which is considered one of the most renowned pieces of art globally and a key symbol of ancient Egypt.
- Qasr El Nil Bridge - The Qasr el Nil Bridge (initially named Khedive Ismail Bridge, Egyptian Arabic: Asr el Nil Bridge) is a historic swing bridge built in 1931, replacing the first bridge to span the Nile River in central Cairo, Egypt. It links Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo on the river’s east bank to the southern end of Gezira/Zamalek Island. The bridge’s east and west entrances feature four large bronze lion statues, created in the late 19th century by French sculptor and animalier Henri Alfred Jacquemart.
- Zamalek (Gezira Island) - Gezira is an island in the Nile, located in central Cairo, Egypt. The island’s southern part includes the Gezira district, while the northern third comprises the Zamalek district.
Gezira lies west of downtown Cairo and Tahrir Square, connected by four bridges on both the east and west sides of the Nile: the Qasr El Nil Bridge, 15 May Bridge, Al-Gala’a Bridge, and 6th October Bridge. Under the 19th-century ruler Khedive Ismail, the island was initially named “Jardin des Plantes” (French for “Garden of Plants”) due to its extensive collection of exotic plants from around the world.
- 6th of October City - The 6th of October Bridge (Arabic: كوبري 6 أكتوبر Kubri 6 [Sadis] Uktubar) is an elevated highway in Cairo, Egypt’s capital. The 20.5-kilometer (12.7-mile) bridge and causeway cross the Nile twice, extending from the western bank suburbs, through Gezira Island, to Downtown Cairo, and further connecting the city to highways leading to Cairo International Airport in the east.
The bridge is named to commemorate the date of Operation Badr in 1973, when the Egyptian military crossed the Suez Canal and attacked the Israeli military’s Bar Lev Line, initiating the Yom Kippur War.

- Nile River - The Nile (also known as the Nile River) is a major north-flowing river in northeastern Africa, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. It is the longest river in Africa and has historically been regarded as the longest river in the world, although some research suggests the Amazon River may be slightly longer. Among the world’s major rivers, the Nile has one of the smallest annual flows in cubic meters of water. Stretching about 6,650 km (4,130 mi), its drainage basin spans eleven countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt. The Nile is a crucial water source for Egypt, Sudan, and South Sudan, and plays a vital role in supporting agriculture and fishing.
