- Qaitbay Castle - The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel in Alexandria, heading to the Qaitbay Citadel, a significant fortress on the Mediterranean Sea’s coast. Constructed by the Mamluk Sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay between 882 AH/1477 AD and 884/1479 AD, it was built over the remnants of Alexandria’s Lighthouse and served as a defense against naval invasions.
The citadel, made of limestone, covers an area of approximately 17,550 m². It is encircled by an outer wall equipped with defense towers.
An inner wall encloses the citadel’s courtyard, featuring several rooms, some of which were used as barracks and others for storage.
The entrance to the citadel leads to the courtyard, where the main tower is situated in the northwest. This impressive square fort has three floors, with its four corners featuring half-circular towers that support protruding balconies for city defense.
