Muscat-Sinkhole-Fins Beach-Wadi Shab-Sur-Ras Al Hadd
Bimmah Sinkhole - The tour starts in Muscat in the morning and heads towards Ras Al Hadd, with the first stop at the Bimmah sinkhole (swimming in the sinkhole lake is possible). Bimmah Sinkhole is a water-filled depression in the limestone of eastern Muscat Governorate in Oman. It features a lake with turquoise waters, measuring 50 m by 70 m wide and approximately 20 m deep. Located just 600 m from the sea, between the coastal towns of Dibab and Bimmah village, the sinkhole was formed by the collapse of the surface layer due to the dissolution of the underlying limestone. To preserve the sinkhole, the local municipality developed a park around it.
Fins Beach - From the sinkhole, we’ll stop at Fins Beach, also known as White Sands Beach. This beach offers a panorama of strikingly white sands and a pebbly shoreline, with sparkling turquoise waters and a soft, cool breeze.
Wadi Shab - From Fins Beach, we drive towards Wadi Shab, an enormous canyon gorge lined with palm trees. The 35 to 40-minute hike through the canyon (walking shoes or trainers and swimming shoes are required) leads to crystal clear water pools. Tourists can swim through the warm waters from pool to pool, eventually reaching a crevice cave with a small waterfall inside. Sunlight filters in, turning the water a beautiful turquoise blue while water showers down one side of the cave from the wadi beyond.
Sur - From Wadi Shab, we continue to Sur for a city tour. We’ll visit the Dhow Factory and the old part of Sur, where you can see houses designed with wooden doors and windows.
Al Hadd - The tour continues to Ras Al Hadd, where you’ll check into your hotel/resort. In the evening, after dinner, we visit the Turtle Sanctuary at Ras Al Jinz. Here, we’ll go on a guided night tour on the beach under the stars, with a high chance of seeing Omani sea turtles building nests and laying eggs. If you’re lucky, you might even see baby turtles hatching.
Ras Al Hadd-Wadi Bani Khalid-Wahiba Sands
Wadi Bani Khalid - Today, we visit Wadi Bani Khalid, one of the largest and most beautiful wadis in Oman. After a short 10-minute walk (walking shoes are required), you can swim in 9-meter deep sparkling water pools, sunbathe, and relax in the scenic wadi canyons.
Wahiba Sands - In the afternoon, we head to our desert camp in Wahiba Sands, a spectacular desert covering 12,500 square kilometers. Also known as Al Sharqiya Sands, this region is named after the Bani Wahiba tribe and spans 180 km north to south and 80 km east to west. Relax at the camp or join an adventurous 4x4 drive in the sand dunes with our experienced tour guide. We’ll watch the stunning sunset from one of the big sand dunes and end the day with a buffet dinner at the camp.
Wahiba Sands-Al Mudhaireb-Ibra-Zukait Tower Tombs-Nizwa
Ibra - From Al Mudhaireb, we’ll visit the old village of Ibra, which is approximately 1000 years old. Built from mud and limestone, you can walk around the village, which is not completely abandoned as some people still live there.
Zukait Tombs - From Ibra, on the way to Nizwa, we’ll stop at the cylindrical tombs in the village of Zukait. Dating back to the third millennium BC, these tombs are located on a hilltop in the Al Dakhiliyah region and are made of mountain rock stacked to create a distinctive beehive shape. We then continue to Nizwa, the old capital city of Oman. After checking into the hotel, you have free leisure time for the rest of the day.
Nizwa Market (Souq) Fort-Green Mountain-Birkat Al Moz-Nizwa
Nizwa Souk - In the morning, we visit Nizwa Souq, where a wide variety of vendors offer goods in the streets. You can find vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, Omani sweets (Halwa), dates, spices, and souvenirs in authentic old market halls. The Friday cattle market is especially interesting, with locals from nearby villages selling their cattle and chickens in a circus-style open marketplace.
Nizwa Fort Oman - Next to the souq is Nizwa Fortress, now a museum offering splendid views of the ancient town and surrounding mountains. You can explore the impressive fortress, its many rooms, passages, and towers. The fort is an architectural testimony to the economic and military achievements of the early Yaruba dynasty from the mid-17th century. It was designed to withstand strong attacks, with traps laid along the corridors to deter intruders.
Jebel Akhdar - From Nizwa, we drive to Jebel Akhdar, known as the “Green Mountain,” one of the most scenic areas in Oman. Part of the Al Hajar Mountain Range, Jebel Akhdar is named for its green terraced gardens surrounding the villages. A variety of fruits like pomegranates, apricots, apples, olives, grapes, roses, peaches, and walnuts are grown here. There are interesting walks in Wadi Bani Habib, Shrejah, Al Ain, and Al Aqur.
Birkat Al Mouz Ruins - From Jebel Akhdar, we visit Birkat Al Moz, which has a large falaj system supplying water to date palms and vegetables for many orchards. Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, it’s worth spending some time walking around the old part of the village.
Nizwa-Jabreen Castle-Misfah Al Abriyeen-Al Hamra-Wadi Ghul (Wadi Nakhar)-Jabal Shams (Grand Canyon)
Jibreen Castle - Today, we drive up to Jebel Shams mountain (Grand Canyon of Oman). On the way, we’ll stop at Jabreen Castle, originally designed as a presidential palace in 1670 by Balarab bin Sultan of the Ya’arubi Dynasty. Renovated in 1984, the interior includes various furniture and traditional utensils, giving visitors a taste of the period castle lifestyle. The building is decorated with elaborate wood carvings, ceiling paintings, and stucco work. The castle is open to visitors.
Misfat al Abreyeen - Next, we drive to Misfah Al Abreyeen, a picturesque village on a steep slope at the foot of Jebel Shams. It consists of old homes and narrow streets, with a falaj system for many orchards, date palms, and vegetables. It’s worth spending some time walking around the village. We then visit the ancient village of Al Hamra.
Jabal Shams - From Wadi Nakhar, we drive up to Jebel Shams mountain (the Grand Canyon of Oman), standing at 3009 meters. This mountain offers an adventurous off-road experience and fantastic views. We reach the canyon view at 2000 meters, stop to enjoy the view and take photos, and then continue to our resort for the night.
Grand Canyon-Balad Sayt-Wadi Bani Auf-Nakhal Fort-Muscat
Bald Sayt - In the morning, we drive down the mountain on the east side into Wadi Bani Awf. This mountain road offers an exciting off-road experience and fantastic views of dramatic canyons and wadis. We’ll pass several villages, with the most beautiful being Balad Sayt, surrounded by mountains. Once we reach the valley (Wadi Bani Awf), we’ll pass through impressive wadi canyons (Snake Canyon) and numerous small villages.
Nakhal Fort - From there, we continue to Nakhal to visit the beautiful Nakhal Fortress. Located at the foothills of the mountains in a small town with extensive date palm plantations, this magnificent 1500-year-old fortress rises out of the mountain rock, towering above the ancient village. It has witnessed many battles and is packed with hidden escape routes and secret passages. You can explore the restored fortress and visit all the rooms, decorated in the original old style. The view from the top over the mountains and green date plantations is outstanding.
