- Wadi Ghul - Oman’s Grand Canyon - Departing from Muscat, the journey heads to Jabal Shams. Before ascending Jabal Shams, there is a stop at the ancient village of Wadi Ghul, which is 2000 years old and located at the base of Mountain Ghul. This village, visible on the way to Jabal Shams, has been deserted by its residents and is constructed from solid stones.
- Jebel Shams - The trip continues with a drive up to Jabal Shams (Jabal means Mountain, Shams means Sun). This mountain road leads to Jebel Shams Mountain, known as the Grand Canyon of Oman, standing at 3009 meters. It is one of Oman’s most adventurous mountains, offering thrilling off-road experiences and breathtaking views. The journey reaches the canyon view at 2000 meters, where there is a stop to enjoy the scenery and take photos.
- Wadi Nakhr Canyon - From Jabal Shams, the drive descends into Wadi Al Nakhar. Wadi Al Nakhr is renowned as the Grand Canyon of the Middle East, featuring stunning sites and a spectacular view. Its name is derived from the local word for “necrosis,” referring to the rock sculpture process “erosion” caused by the valley’s water over time.
Wadi Al Nakhar is one of the deepest valleys in Oman due to its geographical features. The significant gap in Jabal Shams is considered a crucial water source, as its large opening leads to valleys and reefs forming the Al Nakhar valley.
- Misfat al Abreyeen - From Wadi Al Nakhar, the journey proceeds to Misfat Al Abriyeen. This charming village is situated on a steep slope at the base of Jebel Shams and consists of ancient homes and narrow streets. It features a falaj system for numerous orchards, date palms, and vegetables, making it worthwhile to spend time exploring the village.
The journey concludes with a return to Muscat from Misfat Al Abriyeen.
