- Pyramids of Giza - The Giza Pyramids, built to last for eternity, have indeed stood the test of time. These monumental tombs are remnants of Egypt’s Old Kingdom era, constructed around 4,500 years ago.
Egypt’s pharaohs anticipated becoming gods in the afterlife. To prepare for the next world, they built temples for the gods and massive pyramid tombs for themselves—stocked with everything each ruler would need to guide and sustain himself in the next world.
Pharaoh Khufu initiated the first Giza pyramid project, around 2550 B.C. His Great Pyramid is the largest in Giza, rising approximately 481 feet (147 meters) above the plateau. It is estimated to contain 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 to 15 tons.
Khufu’s son, Pharaoh Khafre, constructed the second pyramid at Giza, around 2520 B.C. His necropolis also features the Sphinx, a mysterious limestone monument with the body of a lion and a pharaoh’s head. The Sphinx may serve as a guardian for the pharaoh’s entire tomb complex.
