Highlights
  • Durres - Latin historical accounts consistently assert that the Biturica vine, an ancient Illyrian variety, is the progenitor of the Carmenet grape lineage (which includes notable types like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and more), and it’s suggested that the Biturica minori (akin to the Gamay grape variety) may have its roots in Durrës (Albania). Following the Roman conquest in 168 BC, the territory was segmented into various provinces, with the locally produced wine gaining acclaim for its distinctive taste.

Viticulture persisted in the region up until the commencement of Ottoman dominion in the latter part of the 15th century. Subsequently, Albania’s journey to sovereignty was arduous. Similar to other countries under Islamic influence, viticulture experienced a significant decline due to religious dietary laws. From 1944 until 1992, Albania was governed by a socialist regime, which repurposed nearly all vineyards and wineries to focus on wine exportation. By the year 1990, the vineyard expanse in Albania was estimated to be between 18,000 and 20,000 hectares.

It's definitely worth doing. - We had a fantastic time tasting wines from Albania. The setting was lovely, and we received excellent service. There was a lot of food served, and we bought some wine to take home because we enjoyed it so much. Our kids loved playing with the tiny ducks and chicks around the winery and strolling around the vineyards.Thank you for this amazing experience!

Albanian wines 🍷 - This was my first-ever wine tasting experience and it was perfect. Elena was our guide and she explained the process of making Wine & Raki. She made the whole explanation engaging, after which we went back for wine tasting and tried the different types of Wines, raki, oliv oil with a generous portion of bread, goat butter and red pepper cheese and local products from the farm. She made the whole experience so much better.

Highly recommend this trip! - We went on this wine tour last week, and it was fantastic. The winery is stunning, with beautiful landscapes and unique bunkers where the wine is produced and stored. After the tour, we were seated at a charming table among the olive trees and grapevines. We tasted three wines, each paired with delicious food that was among the best we had during our vacation. The tour guide was sweet and knowledgeable, explaining everything well. We highly recommend this trip!

Fantastic afternoon wine tour. - We are 5 girls from Neatherland who booked this experience. We were very glad that we did this. The winery is situated in Durrës countrysidea hillside; the views are stunning, and we had a wonderful guides. The tour starts in a bus with a local guide who picked up from our hotel, and teaches us on the way about communist times in Albania. Then drop off at the vineyard to start the winery tour, then into the wine-producing area, and wine tasting. We had very tasty wines, very tasty food, amazing views, and strong raki. Thank you so much for such a wonderful day.

Lovely experience - We had Mario as our guide and he was great! Very fun and knowledgeable!! We had Elina (not sure how to spell) at the winery and she was amazing!! She gave a very detailed and insightful tour. The wine selection and food was Devine!! Highly recommend. The only issue we had was that we thought we had booked for an 11am tour and it was changed to 5pm last minute, but we ended up really enjoying it in the evening 🤩🤩🤩

You must do it if you are visiting Albania - We came to Albania for the first time, and we booked this experience! It was an absolutely amazing experience from the moment we were picked up at our hotel by our guide. He gave us  homemade Raki on the minibus as a local Albanian welcome drink. When we arrived at the winery, the guide gave us an amazing guided tour. The food was outstanding, and the wine and olive oil were excellent. I would highly recommend this experience to everyone visiting Albania!

Great wines…at a price. - This tour is about 20 minutes outside of Durrës. We were picked up at our hotel for an extra €40 (€20each) at 17:00. On arrival we were greeted by a very enthusiastic Elena. The tour consisted of a five minute trip to a nearby vine with an explanation of the grape varieties and the harvesting. Then it was on to the first of two bunkers, now reused as wine cellars. This part of the tour took only 20-30 minutes. We were then brought to the restaurant for the tasting. The wines were one white and two reds. And also a sample of the two raki drinks that the produce, white and red. These were accompanied by three courses of appetisers. The wines were excellent and also the two raki, the quality showed. The guidelines time for the tour is 4-6 hours but it is hard to see how it could take that long…unless you decide to stay and order more wine and enjoy it for the remaining few hours…which we did. Our driver waited patiently for us and then dropped us back to our hotel in Durrës. The price of €89 per person is quite steep for the basic tour plus paying extra for hotel pickup but we thoroughly enjoyed the evening drinking a few more bottles with friends.

Beautiful wine tour - Amazing experience! Very kind and friendly guides and people. Beautiful scenery and great wine. The negatives are the arrangements regarding the food and wine. Would have wanted the food and wine served at the same time for example. Everything else was perfect!
