- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (Arabic: مقابر كوم الشقافة; meaning “Mound of Shards”) is a renowned archaeological site in Alexandria, Egypt, recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
This necropolis features a collection of Alexandrian tombs, statues, and artifacts from the Pharaonic funerary tradition, influenced by Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman styles. Reflecting the era, the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa blend Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultural elements; some statues exhibit Egyptian design but are adorned with Roman attire and hairstyles, while other features share a similar aesthetic. A circular staircase, historically used to lower deceased bodies, descends into the tombs carved into the bedrock during the Antonine emperors’ reign (2nd century CE).

Alexandria Library - The Great Library of Alexandria in Alexandria, Egypt, was among the largest and most important libraries of the ancient world. It was part of a broader research institution known as the Mouseion, dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts. The concept of a universal library in Alexandria might have been suggested by Demetrius of Phalerum, an exiled Athenian statesman residing in Alexandria, to Ptolemy I Soter, who may have initiated plans for the Library, though it was likely constructed during the reign of his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus. The Library rapidly amassed numerous papyrus scrolls, thanks to the Ptolemaic kings’ vigorous and well-funded text acquisition strategies. The exact number of scrolls housed at any time is uncertain, with estimates ranging from 40,000 to 400,000 at its peak.
