Alexandria Library - The Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt was one of the largest and most important libraries of the ancient world. It was part of a larger research institution called the Mouseion, dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts. The concept of a universal library in Alexandria may have been suggested by Demetrius of Phalerum, an exiled Athenian statesman, to Ptolemy I Soter, who likely initiated plans for the Library. However, the Library itself was probably constructed during the reign of his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus. The Library quickly amassed numerous papyrus scrolls, thanks to the Ptolemaic kings’ aggressive and well-funded text acquisition policies. The exact number of scrolls housed at any time is unknown, but estimates range from 40,000 to 400,000 at its peak.
