Highlights
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, also known as the Hill of Treasure, are a vast necropolis and royal cemetery dating back to the second century AD. This site uniquely blends Roman, Hellenistic, and Pharaonic art, evident in the wall paintings, statues, funeral objects, and tombs. It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

  • Ancient Roman Amphitheater - For over 500 years, Alexandria was Egypt’s capital during significant historical periods. Greek scholars and philosophers visited to learn about Egyptian culture, which fascinated the world. Under Ptolemaic rule, many roads were built to connect the city with nearby harbors and islands, and numerous structures now regarded as historic monuments were constructed. The Alexandria Library, the Lighthouse, Pompey’s Pillar, and other major attractions were established during the Ptolemaic dynasty and Roman emperors. The Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria is a notable highlight, and this article will delve into its history and design.

  • Pompey’s Pillar - The name is misleading. This solitary column on a rocky hilltop in Alexandria has no connection to the Roman Consul and General Gaius Pompey, Julius Caesar’s rival in a civil war, who was murdered by a Ptolemaic pharaoh in 48 BC after fleeing to Alexandria. Crusaders mistakenly believed the 100-foot (30-meter) red Aswan granite pillar marked his burial site. Instead, it is a triumphal monument erected around 300 AD for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The true significance of this archaeological site lies in what stood here before the pillar: the Serapeum, Alexandria’s acropolis.

  • Kayetbai - Pharos Island
On the northern tip of Pharos Island, Sultan Qaitbay (1468-1496 AD) constructed the picturesque Fort Qaitbay. Built on the Mediterranean shore, the fort was designed to protect Egypt’s northern borders from invaders.

Pharos Island was an ideal location for strategic buildings. Earlier, Ptolemy II (280-247 BC) built a lighthouse here, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, standing up to 100 meters high. The lighthouse was later destroyed by earthquakes and erosion, and its blocks were used to build Fort Qaitbay.

In 1475 AD, Sultan El-Ashraf Seif El-Din Qaitbay visited the site with his family and chose it to fortify Egypt’s northern borders. The fortress was inaugurated in 1477 AD.
