The column stands 26.85 meters high, including its base and capital, and weighs an estimated 285 tons.

The cathedral stands on the site of a church founded by St. Mark the Evangelist in AD 60. St. Mark, author of the second Gospel, is believed to have arrived in Alexandria around AD 60 and stayed for about seven years.
