- Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The guide will collect visitors and proceed to Alexandria’s ancient library, once one of the most esteemed classical institutions. Replacing it might seem daunting, yet the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, achieves this with great success. This modern architectural marvel aims to revive the original center of learning and culture’s brilliance. It has become a key cultural venue in Egypt, hosting numerous international performers and housing a collection of outstanding museums.
- Ancient Roman Amphitheater - Next, visitors will explore The Roman Amphitheater, a popular monument in Alexandria City. Amphitheaters were widespread during Roman rule, found in countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey, and across Europe and the Middle East. The Roman Amphitheater in Alexandria is unique in Egypt. “Kom El Dekka” in Arabic means “hill of rubble” or “hill of benches,” named by historian El Neweiry in the early 20th century. He observed piles of rubble and sand from the Mahmoudeyya Canal excavation at the 19th century’s end, resembling large benches. El Neweiry gave the area its well-known name. The Roman Amphitheater in Alexandria is a significant Roman architectural achievement in Egypt.
- Montazah Gardens - Montaza Palace, located in Alexandria’s Montaza district, is a palace, museum, and expansive gardens. Built on a low plateau east of central Alexandria, it overlooks a Mediterranean beach. King Fuad I added the larger Al-Haramlik Palace and royal gardens to Montazah Palace in 1932 as a summer retreat. The Egyptian royal family used the palace for summer vacations. By 1932, King Fouad commissioned a larger palace, Haremlik, and his son, King Farouk, constructed a bridge to the sea.
- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are so significant that UNESCO has designated them a World Heritage Site. These catacombs house well-preserved artifacts from various eras, including ancient Egyptian and Roman tomb inscriptions. In 1900, a donkey accident led to the discovery of carved tombs and burial chambers in a cave.
- Pompey’s Pillar - Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria is a Roman triumphal column and the largest of its kind. Constructed outside the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople, it is the only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt, not composed of drums. It is one of the largest ancient monoliths and monolithic columns ever erected.
- Alexandria National Museum - The museum boasts over 1,800 archaeological artifacts spanning all eras, from the ancient state to the modern era. These pieces showcase Egypt’s civilization, culture, arts, and industries throughout these ages. The exhibits illustrate Egypt’s historical unity and personality, covering all historical stages, national and historical events. It begins with the Egyptian Pharaonic background, the oldest Egyptian civilization, followed by the Ptolemaic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic eras, concluding with the modern era, starting with the Muhammad Ali family’s rule and ending with the 1952 AD revolution.
- Royal Jewelry Museum - The Royal Jewelry Museum displays the Egyptian royal family’s collectibles, founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1805, ruling for 150 years until 1952. Zaynab Fahmi built the palace in 1919 in Zizinya, Alexandria, as the residence of Fatma al-Zahra’, daughter of Prince Ali Haider, a descendant of Muhammad Ali Pasha. The palace, a stunning backdrop for the family’s magnificent possessions, uniquely blends European and Islamic styles, reflecting the royal family’s refined taste. Paintings, gilded ceilings, and mosaics adorn the palace rooms. It consists of two wings, eastern and western, connected by a corridor, each with a basement and two floors.
- Fort Qaitbey - Sultan Qaitbey constructed this charming fortress in the 14th century to protect Alexandria from the Ottoman Empire’s advances. Although the Ottomans took Egypt in 1512, the fortress remains, strategically positioned on a narrow land strip extending into Alexandria’s harbor from the corniche. The fortress’s current form is not original, as it suffered significant damage during the British bombardment of Alexandria in a nationalist uprising against British dominance in 1882 and was rebuilt around the 20th century’s turn.
