- Alexandria - At 6, 7, 8, or 9 am, we begin your tour of Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city and its capital for nearly a thousand years. Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria has a Mediterranean atmosphere and is renowned for its Roman ruins.
- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Your first stop in this historic city is the catacombs, the largest Roman cemetery with three levels carved into the rock from the 1st or 2nd century.
- Serapeum of Alexandria - The “Pompey Pillar,” Egypt’s most esteemed memorial column, stands as a significant historical symbol. Made from solid red granite, this towering structure is approximately 28 meters high with a base diameter of 2.7 meters. An inscription in Greek on the upper western side honors Emperor Diocletian for his dedication to justice and his role as Alexandria’s protector. It also recognizes Postumus, the Prefect of Egypt, who supervised the monument’s construction. The Pompey Pillar is a testament to Egypt’s rich heritage and enduring legacy.
- Bibliotheca Alexandria - The Library of Alexandria, built in the third century BC by Ptolemy I Soter, was one of the ancient world’s most famous and influential libraries. Located in Alexandria, it housed a vast collection of books and manuscripts on philosophy, mathematics, science, and literature, becoming a center of learning and culture. The library’s collection, said to contain up to 500,000 scrolls, was one of the largest in the ancient world and home to renowned scholars like Euclid and Eratosthenes.
- Qaytbay Castle - The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is one of Egypt’s most important defensive strongholds along the Mediterranean coast. Built in the 15th century AD, it was crucial to Alexandria’s fortifications. Located at the entrance of the eastern harbor on Pharos Island, it was erected on the site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse functioned until the Arab conquest, despite several disasters and changes in shape. Restoration began around 880 AD under Ahmed Ibn Tulun. An earthquake in the 11th century damaged the octagonal part, leaving the bottom to serve as a watchtower with a small mosque on top. A destructive earthquake in the 14th century ultimately destroyed the building. An optional stop for lunch at the fish market is available.
