Highlights
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Begin your delightful day by meeting your guide at your hotel. Travel via highway from Cairo (approximately a 3-hour drive each way) to the renowned city. Upon arrival, your tour guide will take you through the city’s rich history, starting with the necropolis, which features a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues, and archaeological artifacts from the Pharaonic funeral cult, influenced by Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman styles. The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa blend Roman elements due to the era in which they were created.
  • Pompey’s Pillar - The second attraction is Pompey’s Pillar, a name that is somewhat misleading. This solitary column, standing on a rocky hilltop in the heart of Alexandria, has no connection to the Roman Consul and General Gaius Pompey, who was Julius Caesar’s adversary in a civil war and was killed by a Ptolemaic pharaoh in 48 BC after fleeing to Alexandria. The myth that the 100-foot (30-meter) red Aswan granite pillar marked his burial site was propagated by Crusaders. In reality, the pillar is a triumphal monument erected around 300 AD for the Roman Emperor.
  • Fort Qaitbey - The third stop is the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria, Egypt. Established in 1477 AD (882 AH) by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay, the Citadel is positioned on the eastern side of the northern tip of Pharos Island at the entrance of the Eastern Harbour.
  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina - This famous library in Egypt, known as the Great Library of Alexandria, was one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world. It was part of a larger research institution called the Mouseion, dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts. The concept of a universal library in Alexandria may have been suggested by Demetrius of Phalerum, an exiled Athenian statesman, to Ptolemy I Soter, who likely initiated plans for the Library. However, the Library itself was probably constructed during the reign of his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus. The Library amassed numerous papyrus scrolls, thanks to the Ptolemaic kings’ aggressive and well-funded efforts to acquire texts. While the exact number of scrolls housed at any time is unknown, estimates range from 40,000 to 400,000 at its peak. Note that the library is closed on Fridays.
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria - Also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, this lighthouse was constructed by the Ptolemaic Kingdom during the reign of Ptolemy II…
  • Ancient Roman Amphitheater - Roman amphitheaters are large, circular or oval open-air venues with raised seating, built by the ancient Romans. They hosted events such as gladiator combats, animal hunts (venations), and executions. Approximately 230 Roman amphitheaters have been discovered across the former Roman Empire. Early amphitheaters date back to the republican period, becoming more monumental during the imperial era.

Private Alexandria Tour - We absolutely fell in love with the city! The tour was very well organized - punctual, interesting, flexible to our interests and wishes. The driver who picked us up was extremely friendly and drove safely. The tour guide Rania is very knowledgeable, kind and sweet. We felt very comfortable right away. She knows a lot of things, also beyond the tour spots. The route was well chosen and also efficient for a day trip. We would definitely book this tour again!

Awesome family day trip! - Alexandria was absolutely worth the day trip from Cairo. We had a great day with our guide Khalefa. He explained the sites in an engaging way for our mixed-age family group. Our driver was calm and drove smoothly. We felt very safe. The sites: The Catacombs with the blend of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian decoration, were fun to explore, our kids enjoyed the citadel castle, and we all loved seeing the blue of the Mediterranean Sea and many picturesque boats from our Fish Market lunch. We wished for more time at the new library. What an excellent building with so much thought put into its design! One note: children under 16 are not allowed to visit the main reading room, which was disappointing. In the end, after we asked a different person, our younger teen was allowed to enter when we joined the English speaking tour (no additional charge, with a delightful and knowledgeable local guide). At the end of our day, we stopped to learn about papyrus and essential oils. These presentations were interesting, but kind of a lot after a very full day.

Great day trip to Alexandria from Cairo - Had another excellent full day in Egypt guided by Osama. Picked us from our hotel in Cairo and drove us to Alexandria to see the four major attractions. Osama’s knowledge of Egyptian history from the old kingdom to the Greco Roman period is unmatched. He is also a great guy to hang out with and a wonderful host.

Excellent tour - highly recommended - Highly recommend traveling with Travel Door Tours and Gouda as a guide. Everything was top notch from communication before the tour through flawless organization during the day. Gouda with 15+ years of experience is an excellent guide (in fact one of the best we encountered in Egypt during our 3-week trip) - he has vast knowledge of all the sights and knows Egyptian history inside out (he is getting his PhD in Egyptology). He manages time well to ensure we can cover everything. He is attentive and flexible - for example, we added a couple of stops along the way (not a part of original tour) and also ask him help us buy a few things (including wheel covers for our rental car since we lost them on the bumpy roads in Egypt). He also has a great personality and passion for what he does. We enjoyed the tour so much that we booked a tour with Gouda for my parents in Giza (and as expected it was fenomenal as well). I know that Gouda covers all Egypt (not just Alexandria, Giza, or Cairo) so if you are looking for a well-organized, safe, and enjoyable trip, look no further! Enjoy.

An unforgettable trip to highlight the stunning history of the Ancient city of Alexandria with a legendary guide, Wael. - Wael provided clear communication before our trip and even allowed a later start time. He was prompt and collected us from our hotel lobby. His friendly demeanour, charming personality and immense knowledge of Egyptology made the drive up from Cairo worth it. We arrived at our first stop the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa and were given an in depth history walk reflecting on the different architectural features of the site. Following which we made our way to Pompey's pillar where we again wove the pieces of Egyptian, Greek and Roman history together. Wael was kind enough to invite us for coffee at a local Alexandrian tea room and we were able to get to know abit about each other. The Fortress of Qaitbay was our next stop and we took in spectacular views of Alexandria as we walked around its walls. Our last stop was the Library of Alexandria, and again we wove together pieces of history. Our driver Ahmed took special care of us and ensured we were transported safely as he navigated through traffic as well as crowded streets. What an incredible day, Wael made us feel as if we were long lost friends and gave us a day to remember. He is an excellent photographer and made sure we took pictures at the best spots for photo opportunities. He also gave us tips to enjoy our last few days in Cairo as wel as ideas for our next trip. Know that when you book a tour with Wael, you make a friend, not just acquaintance with a guide.

Great driver, guide & lunch - Our day trip to Alexandria was nice. Mohamed was our driver and extremely cautious/kept us safe on the 2.5 hr drive. Wael was our guide and very knowledgeable about Alexandria. Lunch at Fish Market was delicious and had a full view of the Mediterranean Sea. Wael was helpful in switching 1 fish meal for chicken instead. Great meal. He also helped us to find an ATM before our return to Cairo. But, we were very disappointed because Alexandria Library is closed on Fridays, so we did not get to see inside. The tour company should have told us it was closed Fridays, and offered a different day or another site to see (we did not get a refund for Alexandria Library entrance fees). Double check that Alexandria Library is open and you can get in before confirming booking.
