Bassam is a Great Guide! - I had a terrific tour with Bassam at the Grand Egyptian Museum - he was personalable, knowledgeable, on time to pick me up and very accommodating with all my picture-taking! He answered many of my questions and really has a passion for what he does. Sometimes tour guides seem jaded or bored, but he is energetic and very thorough in his explanations and that made the experience all the better ! He also gave me advice to visit the Coptic Cairo area which I did separately so I am grateful to him for this tip-it was a nice journey to a place in Cairo I was unfamiliar with.
I will send my friends to Bassam !

Amazing 2-day overnight shore excursion from Alexandria to Cairo - We had the most amazing trip to Cairo with our guide Mina and Ramses tours. I originally booked this as a private tour for my husband and me, but after chatting with a few other guests that were on our cruise (NCL GEM Istanbul, Greece, Sicily, Egypt, and Rome Nov 22-Dec 4, 2023) we expanded to a group of 10. I chose Ramses tours after reading many very positive reviews.
The booking experience was easy - we booked the 2-day tour to Cairo from Alexandria that included Giza, the Sphinx, Sakkara, Memphis and the museum. As add-ons, we chose the camel ride, going inside the pyramid, and a dinner cruise on the Nile. We also choose the upgraded hotel option for our overnight stay and we ended up in a super luxurious Fairmont hotel on the Nile (wow!). Ramses asked for a 40% down payment to hold the booking. When others from our cruise wanted to join, it was easy to add them to our group. One couple ended up cancelling just days before the cruise (many travelers were very nervous about the cruise and the ports we were visiting due to the Israel-Hamas war) and they were fully refunded.
We had a lot of angst about this tour as we were not sure if NCL would let us stay overnight off the ship. Once on board, we confirmed that while the cruise company does not recommend this, they can't really stop us as long as we are back on board before they leave port. There was also speculation that the Alexandria port might be cancelled due to the war, and many travelers were very fearful.
We could not have had a better experience with Mina and Ramses tours. Our guide Mina was very knowledgeable about Egypt's ancient and more contemporary history. And we asked a LOT of questions. He was also very gracious and accommodating to our requests and needs.
On the first day we were met just outside the port. We were given instructions on Whatsapp on how to find the guide and driver and it was easy to find them. We were in very good hands with our driver Mohammed who was calm and professional among the chaos that fills the roads and highways in Egypt. At any given moment you can see huge transport trucks sharing the road with a donkey and cart. And people just cross anywhere. Somehow it all works. The drive from Alexandria to the Giza site is about two and a half hours and Mina used the time to fill us in with all kinds of information.
That first sight of the pyramids is breath-taking as you try to believe you are really seeing this with your own eyes! We had ample time to explore the site, look at the ancient marvels, and creep through the long and very narrow passage to the empty chamber inside the pyramid. After this we were able to view the Sphinx and then it was time to ride the camels. I thought we might just get up on the camel and pose for a photo, but it was an actual 15-minute ride through the desert to a plateau where you have an amazing view of the three pyramids. There is only one place where there are officially sanctioned camel rides and our guide helped us navigate the various other offers that came our way. The day included a traditional (and delicious) lunch. At the end we were taken for dinner on a boat on the Nile with a generous buffet, cash bar, entertainment from belly dancers and musicians, and, the night we were there, a spectacular full moon over the Nile. Then we were off to the very posh Fairmont Nile for a comfortable sleep and delicious buffet breakfast.
The second day we visited the sites at Sakkara where you find the earliest step pyramid, and then the monuments at Memphis. We were then offered a choice between the Egyptian museum or the newer Museum of Civilization (the newest new museum is not yet open). We opted for the Museum of Civilization and we were so glad we did. This tells the story of Egypt from its earliest known evidence of human civilization 35,000 years ago, to the great ancient Egyption dynasties, the early coptic Church and people, the rise of the Ottoman empire and up to more modern day. The museum houses countless treasures and artifacts and you can venture to the basement and down a long, narrow corridor that resembles the entry to a pyramid tomb to view the mummies of famous pharaohs, including Ramses II and Nefertiri. The mummies are displayed in a way that is dignified, befitting their rank as royalty.
As we wanted to get back to the ship in time, we opted for a takeout lunch - a typical and tasty shwarma in pita. We were delivered back to the ship with lots of time to spare by our experienced driver Mohammed.
This tour was the highlight of our cruise and trip and we are so glad we chose Ramses Tours and had the incredible Mina to guide us. We highly recommend Ramses Tours to anyone who wishes a terrific day trip or private shore excursion.
