Providence is the sole tall ship in the Washington, DC region. This vessel is a faithful replica of the first ship commissioned by the Continental Congress to become part of the Continental Navy in the battle against Great Britain. Additionally, it was the inaugural ship to join Rhode Island’s navy, making it the first of the American Colonies to engage in naval warfare.

Throughout the war, Providence earned a reputation for being swift and fortunate, thanks in large part to the bold actions of her captain, the renowned John Paul Jones.

Sailing fun on the Potomac with the crew of the Providence - Wonderful sail out on the Potomac River conveniently located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. The crew and staff of the Providence were outstanding; extremely positive and informative. Really appreciated how they let willing guests volunteer to perform some of the crew’s jobs onboard the ship. Add this to your bucket list and head down to Old Town.

Glorious! - The sailing experience on the Providence was the highlight of our trip to Alexandria. The captain and crew were absolutely delightful. Workings of the ship were fascinating and the views from on board were fantastic. We were able to go below and feel what it might have been like for the crew of 70 sailors, living in incredibly confined conditions, contrasted with the captain's cabin, which was still quite small, but seemed luxurious in comparison. Speaking of luxurious, we had a delicious cocktail of rum (of course!) and ginger beer. There is also the opportunity to help hoist the sails and, under the right conditions, have your photo taken with your hand on the tiller, which controls the rudder and direction of the ship. Best of all was experiencing the sails being raised and feeling the wind power the ship. It was nothing short of glorious. The Providence is operated through a nonprofit foundation with people who are clearly dedicated to maintaining a vital part of US and naval history and sharing it with the rest of us. I can't wait to go again.

Best way to see the Potomac! - I attended the first theatrical experience performed aboard the ship while out at sea and had a blast! The crew were all incredibly knowledgeable and kind. Midshipman Carter was swell and Captain Morgan even took time out of running the ship to explain the rigging to me!

Great tour for family and little kids. - The actors were excellent and all the staff was wonderful. My 7 year old and I really enjoyed our immersive tour experience. We learned about the most renowned captain and his achievements on the Providence ship, as well as explored what it was like to work and live on the ship.

Barely Beer - The idea of the chance to take a short sail on a sailing ship was very appealing. That it includes beer from a local Alexandria brewery made it doubly so The sail was great. Motored away from the dock then the volunteer crew raised the sails, with the assistance of guests. A real taste of what it takes to sail a sloop. The beer however, was a 2 oz tasting of four of Port City standards. As a local, there was nothing new to experience so that was a bit of a letdown. The beer wasn't bad, just not unique. Still, a lovely 2-hour cruise on a historical reproduction. Would recommend.
