- Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei - This monument to Christ is a source of inspiration for some, while others see it as a symbol of dictatorship and obscurantism. It was inaugurated across the Tagus River in 1959 by the Portuguese episcopate as a gesture of gratitude to God for sparing Lisbon during World War II. The statue of Christ is 28 meters (90 feet) tall and stands on a 75-meter (246-foot) pedestal. Visitors can take an elevator to the statue’s feet, with the 25 April Bridge located just below. From the statue or the terrace across the monument, there is a stunning panoramic view of nearly the entire city of Lisbon.
- Bacalhoa Palace and Estate - The vineyard spans 14 hectares and was established in 1972. At the request of Thomas Scoville, the then-owner of Quinta da Bacalhôa, António Avillez planted a vineyard here to produce wine similar to that of Bordeaux, particularly Médoc. The red varieties produced include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The vineyard at Quinta da Bacalhôa benefits from an ideal terroir for producing excellent wines, with well-drained clay-limestone soils and a mild climate influenced by the Atlantic.
Explore a privileged landscape as you pass through the gardens and vineyards to the lake house, where you can find the first tile dated in Portugal and discover unique pieces of art from the Commander’s private collection.
The experience includes a visit to the Bacalhôa Museum and concludes with a wine tasting.
- Castelo de Palmela - Palmela Castle is situated on one of the highest points in the Arrabida Mountain, making it difficult to access and ideal for defending the surrounding lands.
During the Christian Reconquest led by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, Palmela was part of the defensive line built south of the Tagus. The king granted the lands of Palmela, Almada, and Alcácer to the Order of Holy Sword, which took responsibility for their defense and settlement. In 1205, King Sancho I reaffirmed this gift by establishing the Order’s Chapter in the castle.
In the 15th century, King John I initiated a series of restoration projects, focusing on the Donjon tower and decreeing the construction of the convent that became the Order’s headquarters from 1443. The castle underwent further modifications in the 17th century during King Pedro II’s reign.
The Santiago convent remained active until the prohibition of religious orders in 1834. After a period of abandonment, the state restored the building in 1945, transforming it into the Pousada (manor hotel) of Portugal.
- Forte de Sao Filipe - Located about 1 km from the city of Setubal, the imposing Fort of St. Philip guards access to the Sado River. It is named after King Philip I of Portugal and II of Spain, who ordered its construction in 1590. Italian military engineer Filipe Terzi, a protégé of the Spanish Royal Court, was awarded the project, which was completed in 1600 under the guidance of Leonardo Torreano due to Terzi’s death.
These fortifications exemplify the adaptations made due to new military strategies and advancements in ballistic firepower at the beginning of the 17th century. The star shape, thick double walls, and wide moat ensured that attacks could not be concentrated, thus enhancing defensive effectiveness.
Inside, the fort protected several buildings, including the former governor’s residence and a small chapel adorned with tiles by artist Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Philip, dated 1736.
