Highlights
  • Sanctuary of Christ the King-Portugal - Construction began in 1934 after the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon visited Brazil and was inspired by the impressive Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Standing at 110 meters, the Cristo-Rei Sanctuary became a significant spiritual landmark in the early 20th century. Today, it serves as a place of prayer and offers stunning views of the capital. Some believe the statue was built as a vow by the Portuguese Episcopate, asking God to keep Portugal out of World War II. The Cardinal declared that this monument would forever symbolize the Portuguese people’s gratitude for the peace they received. It is one of the most iconic symbols adorning the city. Visitors will enjoy a tasting of 10-year Moscatel and 10-year Madeira wine.
  • Torre de Belem - The construction of the Portuguese empire necessitated the protection of the Tagus River entrance, ensuring a robust and effective defense system. Its grandeur was meant to signal to other European powers that the river was well-guarded. Under King D. João II, the defense of the Tagus River’s mouth was organized, featuring artillery coverage as a significant technological advancement. The main defense was strategically placed where the river is narrowest. Visitors will partake in a drink tasting.
  • Parque Eduardo VII - Opened in 1882 and originally named Parque da Liberdade, this park was renamed in 1903 to honor the King of England, who visited Portugal to strengthen the Luso-British alliance. It offers one of the best views of the city. Visitors will enjoy a drink-tasting experience.
  • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - Known as Monte de S. Gens, this ancient worship site likely dates back to Visigoth or Paleochristian times. The current chapel was reconstructed in 1796 after an earthquake. Inside, a famous chair of St. Gens, a marble monolith, is believed to aid pregnant women in praying for a safe delivery. This viewpoint offers one of the most magnificent views of the city. Visitors will have a drink-tasting experience.
  • Alameda dos Oceanos - Located in Parque das Nações, this area was revitalized for the 1998 World Exhibition themed “The Oceans.” Before this transformation, the eastern part of Lisbon was vastly different. Expo 98 was a pivotal event in the city’s history, recognized as the best international exhibition by the Bureau International des Expositions. Food services include a Portuguese cheese platter with red sangria and a Portuguese cold cuts platter with rosé wine.
  • Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara - This is the best spot to enjoy views of the Castle, Baixa, and the Tagus River. Visitors will have a drink-tasting experience.
  • Ginjal Terrasse - Cais do Ginjal offers a stunning view of Lisbon from Almada. Food services include traditional Portuguese fries with green wine, a fish dish with white wine, a meat dish with red wine, and a dessert with Ginjinha tasting.
  • Aqueduto das Aguas Livres - In the reign of King João V, Lisbon faced a water crisis despite abundant natural sources. The Águas Livres Aqueduct was commissioned in 1731 to bring water from Sintra to the Mãe d’Água Reservoir, distributing it throughout the city. This will be a passing visit.
  • 25 de Abril Bridge - With a deck 70 meters high and main pillars reaching 190 meters, this bridge transformed the connection between the two banks and altered Lisbon’s skyline. It stands as a symbol of the city’s and country’s modernization.
  • Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Vasco da Gama attended mass here before his voyage to India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, this Manueline architectural marvel was built from 1501, funded by trade revenues from Africa and the East. This will be a passing visit.
  • Padrao dos Descobrimentos - Originally built in 1940 for the Exhibition of the Portuguese World, this monument honors the Portuguese Discoveries. Shaped like a caravel, it features 33 figures linked to the Discoveries. Inaugurated in 1960, it includes a marble compass rose depicting the main routes of the Portuguese Discoveries.
  • Praca Luis de Camoes - Luís Vaz de Camões, a renowned poet, is a key figure in Portuguese literature. After surviving a shipwreck, he published “Os Lusíadas,” an epic poem dedicated to King D. Sebastião. The Monument to Camões, inaugurated in 1867, is a significant urban sculpture in Lisbon.
  • Praca Marques de Pombal - Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known as Marquês de Pombal, was appointed Minister of the Kingdom by King José I. After the 1755 earthquake devastated Lisbon, he led the city’s reconstruction, making significant progress within a year.
  • Rossio Square - One of Lisbon’s oldest and busiest squares, it has hosted fairs, bullfights, festivals, and revolutions. Largely destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt with new Pombaline buildings. The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, with its neo-Palladian facade, was added in 1846, along with a statue of D. Pedro IV.
  • Se de Lisboa - Built in 1147 over a Muslim mosque, this cathedral is Lisbon’s most important religious building. Its architecture blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles due to various modifications over time. The cathedral houses the remains of St. Vincent, the city’s patron saint.
  • Panteao Nacional - This Baroque monument, with a Greek cross plan and majestic dome, became the National Pantheon in 1916. It houses the remains of notable Portuguese figures like Amália Rodrigues and Eusébio.
  • Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) - Built in 1515 as a royal residence, this square was a central point of Lisbon life during the Age of Discoveries. After the 1775 earthquake, it was transformed into Praça do Comércio as part of Marquês de Pombal’s reconstruction plan.
  • Ribeira das Naus - Historically, this site was where many ships for Portuguese maritime discoveries were built. Today, it serves as an extension of Terreiro do Paço, connecting it to the Tagus River.
  • Palacio de Belem - This palace served as the Royal House until 1910 and now functions as the official residence of the Head of State. It is used for political and state visits, with a green flag hoisted when the President is present.
  • Altice Arena - Originally named Pavilhão da Utopia for EXPO’98, this arena was later renamed after the telecommunications company Altice. Its design resembles a horseshoe crab, with wooden beams inside mimicking the hull of an inverted 16th-century ship.
  • Oceanario de Lisboa - Built for Expo 98, this public aquarium is a major attraction in Lisbon and the second largest in Europe. It receives about 1 million visitors annually, making it Portugal’s most visited cultural facility.
